A state funeral service was held at the Capitol in tribute to ten individuals named Burns. Flowers covered the bier as a cabinet was presented, and the event honored their memory with formal proceedings and oblique references to the deceased.
An inmate identified as Farris, imprisoned for robbery, died after convulsions while housed at a Michigan facility. He had been transferred for a sanity hearing. Another inmate, Boyd Monroe, killed with an iron bar in October 1936, died a month later from injuries to his skull.
A 16 year old high school honor student Lloyd Canty Jr of Barrington suburb was found dead in his bedroom with a shotgun wound to the head. Police ruled it a suicide but parents doubt the accident theory. He had returned home around 1 am after staying out late and was last seen alive before the gunshot. The youth owned the shotgun used in the self inflicted death.
Washington June 5 Chief Justice Alfred A Wheat of the District of Columbia Supreme Court unanimously upheld the Public Works Administration in allocating funds to municipalities for municipal power plant reinstruction. Fourity companies had sought injunctions challenging the administration yardstick program creating municipally owned power plants in competition with private utilities. The suits challenged fund allocations to towns in Oklahoma Texas Iowa and Alabama among about 50 awaiting action.
Washington June 5 President Roosevelt nominates Chester Co Divisy as Federal Reserve member nominee to Senate. If approved the board will have its tenth seat filled, a move seen as a surprise and contrary to widespread belief that the post would not be filled before November.
Washington June 4 The death of Speaker Joseph W Burns leaves the Democratic House majority torn as leaders negotiate a new floor leader. The contest would pit Northern and Southern Democrats, with Rep John J O Connor of New York as a likely candidate to challenge for the post as a path to the Speakership.
Five youths robbed the Little Ferry National Bank as four employees including a woman teller watched, fleeing with about 15000 cash aided by grenades and firearms. Cashier Peter A Wiseman recalled the moment the bank emptied and bandits threatened to bomb wages if resisted.
Washington June 5 adjournment of the Seventy fourth Congress and final enactment of the AAU 600 4 H tas fall and 1 450 000 000 relief fund were postponed until the week of June 15. Administration leaders delayed the planned June 6 adjournment date after Speaker Joseph W Burns death. Leaders plan recesses during the Republican convention in Cleveland and return June 15 to push the legislative program ahead of the Democratic gathering in Philadelphia. The House will observe a funeral for the Speaker and resume July 15?
In Antwerp police and dock workers clashed injuring 12 policemen and 15 dockers while 20 dockers were arrested. Five military regiments were ordered to stay in barracks as tensions rose with fears the strike could spread to Rotterdam. Authorities sought a quick settlement to end the port paralysis.
