Progress Report On Secret Four Power Berlin Talks

Reported progress from a second secret session among the Big Four foreign ministers. Western officials cautioned that no decisions were reached yet optimism grew for renewed Berlin talks and possible future access agreements though a full revival of four power control remains uncertain.

Acting chief Bedrich Bruegel of the Czechoslovak Mission Hero fled to the West and accused the Communist government of running a spy ring in Germany. He follows predecessor Dastich, the seventh of ten Berlin Mission members to flee since the February coup, in a May 26 letter released by the U.S. military government.

Seek 2000 Dollar Fund For Girl Scouts Drive Planned In Lebanon

Plans for the annual fund drive to aid Girl Scouts were mapped at a Lebanon meeting held at the Lebanon Business and Professional Women Club headquarters. Ralph W Miller chaired, with Harold Gentry as assistant, and eight local women's organizations will form teams to canvass districts and industrial plants. The drive targets a minimum $2000 fund, with part supporting 106 girls to attend the 1949 Chris Scouts Camp at McCormick’s Creek State Park July 30 to August 7. Continued on page 4.

Den Chief Training Course Set for Boone County

Den chiefs from cub scout packs in Boone county will meet at the Central Christian church next Thursday for the first of two meetings in a den chiefs training course. Those completing the course will be awarded certificates. Herbert Fletcher, Boone county field commissioner, will head the course with Harry DeCrees and Paul Deere assisting. The program includes den and pack organization ceremonies, tricks, games, and allies. Films on cubbing will illustrate den chief responsibilities. A few openings exist for boy scouts to become den chiefs. interested should attend.

Democrats Split In Senate On Labor Measure

Senate Democrats divided into three camps over labor legislation. One group led by Claude Pepper and Matthew Neely backs Truman’s plan to repeal the Taft-Hartley act and revive a form of the Wagner act. A Southern faction favors amending administration language, while a third group leans toward the Taft-Hartley framework. Administration aides warn as many as a dozen Democrats could desert the administration on a showdown vote.

Escaped convict caught after Penitentiary break in West Virginia

State Police reported three more Escapees from the Tfiman group were rounded up in Rock, West Virginia. Dennis Tayler, 27, was captured in a grocery store nearby and was taken to the state prison after being recognized in prison clothing. A fourth man had been captured earlier. Police pressed to locate others believed hiding nearby as residents were warned to stay alert.

Family Ice Box Death Trap Kills Three in Walnut Ridge Ark

A family ice box trapping three children led to their deaths in Walnut Ridge Arkansas authorities said they believe the youngsters accidentally locked themselves inside while playing near the device. Delbert Chastain and Jose’s brother Ana Ramses, along with Ethel Rains, died from the incident as investigators traced the sequence of events from the box to the nearby homes. A relative heard a cry for help and found the box wedged shut, prompting a rescue which arrived too late for the victims. The surviving child was transported to a hospital with injuries.

Work Stoppage Threat Near Atomic Plant Crisis

A possible strike by workers at the Oak Ridge uranium plant could cripple uranium-235 separation operations. The United Carbide & Carbon Chemicals Corp runs the plant for the government, with 220 workers at stake. Federal action is expected to prevent a strike, possibly through a Truman panel to resolve the dispute with a post report no strike or lockout for a set period.

American Youth Favors Germany Frankfurt

Danny McCarthy a 22 year old Jamyg Island youth professed determination to renounce American citizenship and become German. He was set free today by military government pending trial June 1 for entering Germany illegally. District Attorney William F Dabexon of St Louis reported the case and hoped his mother could persuade him to return home. Danny said he might never come home.
