Mormons trace Carter genealogy back to 1600s
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints presented President Carter with a two volume genealogical record tracing his lineage 12 generations to the 1600s. The work, produced after more than 100 hours of study, was completed at Salt Lake City and includes an 18 by 24 inch framed family tree. Carter’s White House and campaign aides pursued more information on English roots for his son Chip. The church maintains vast microfilmed records and performs temple rites for deceased ancestors.

In Washington the House debated a bill creating a Cabinet level energy department as part of President Carter’s reorganization. An amendment moved power over wellhead natural gas pricing to the independent Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, not the secretary, and passed 236-119.

Judge revokes Helms probation amid tough stance on violators
Superior Court Judge Paul H Johnson Jr revoked the probation of Robbie Helms a 28 year old Lebanon man after finding violations of terms including a May DUI plea. Helms who had been released on shock probation in 1976 had admitted the driving charge and asserted no further trouble since his release. The judge said he would return offenders to prison and hinted at halting shock probation due to workload.
