Pet Parade Set for July on Downtown Square
The Welcome Wagon Club will sponsor a July 1 pet parade at 6 30 p m on the downtown square with seven categories for two age groups six and under and six to 11 years. Prizes include trophies extra drawings, favors for participants and winners will ride in the July 4 parade float. Entry blanks appear later in The Reporter and may be dropped in Snoopy Boxes in area stores.

Turf Damage Forces Lebanon Memorial Park Closure
Lebanon Memorial Park shut Sunday after heavy rain left grounds torn by cars driving in and out, creating deep ruts and costly damage. Park superintendent Clyde Armstrong said repair is difficult, with one car marred and a fire incident. park remains closed until grounds dry and driving is unsafe. Patrons used overflow lots and urged drivers to stay off grass and park elsewhere. Exits: Lebanon Street one way in. North East and North Meridian two way. exit to Country Club Park closed.

May Rainfall Totals 6.83 Inches In Boone Area

Tropical storm Abby moved toward the southwest Florida coast and forecasters predicted hurricane-force winds before landfall tonight between Fort Myers and Tampa. The storm formed on the second day of the hurricane season, 15 early-season storms in 60 years, with 50 mph winds and a north northeast drift. Gales affected Key West and Dry Tortugas as heavy rain drenched south Florida in its wettest May on record.

Three Die in Clemson Textile Plant Blast
A gas-fired drying unit exploded at the J.P. Stevens Co. textile plant in Clemson South Carolina killing three men and injuring about a dozen. The dead included electrician George Mathis 32 department superintendent Edward Whitman 31 and tinter-frame attendant Samuel Cobb 31 all from nearby Seneca. The blast damaged the roof brick wall and equipment and investigators consider possible electrical causes. In all 2,200 workers are employed at the plant making synthetic fibers for rugs.

Heart transplant patient dies as others fail
United Press International reports in Buenos Aires that three transplant recipients died within five hours over the weekend. Only seven of twenty recipients have survived. Antonio E Serrano, 54, received the heart of a 47 year old union leader and lies in a coma in Lanus, described as satisfactory under the circumstances.

Two Car Crash Injures Six near Lebanon at Hall Baker Road
A 5 p.m. Saturday collision on Hall Baker Road near I 65 left six people critically injured. A 1964 Ford driven by Francis Vandermay, 18, an Indiana University student from Lafayette, was struck broadside by a 1964 Mercury driven by 16 year old Marcus Lehmann of Lebanon. Vandermay claimed he stopped at a stop sign and crossed the road as Lehmann's car came over a bridge, sending both vehicles to an embankment. The impact threw a passenger from Lehmann's car and crushed others in Vandermay's vehicle. Vehicle lengths from impact were 64 and 129 feet respectively. Both cars were total losses. In the Lehmann car Marcus Lehmann suffered multiple facial and arm lacerations and possible chest injuries, listed fair at Witham. Robert Edwards, 16, was taken to Robert Long Hospital with a fractured skull and broken left leg.

Richard Robbins Dies After Gun Shot Wounds In Louisville

A driver for a Lafayette trucking firm, he was shot after a man in a nearby parking lot questioned him. The assailant is being sought by police. Survived by his widow Virginia Lee Pritchard and two children Brett E. and Vickie Lee, along with parents and a brother. Services set at Eller Funeral Home Frankfort with burial in Bunnell Cemetery Frankfort.

In Vietnam near Bien Hoa on April 30 1968 Platoon Sgt Lloyd E Tribbett of Bravo Company 4th Battalion 12th Infantry 199th Light Infantry Brigade led a dangerous riverbank search. He moved into the water to expose the enemy shelter locating a wounded North Vietnamese doctor and securing critical information after the capture. Tribbett’s actions followed by discovery of hospital-grade medical supplies underscores his courageous leadership and ultimate sacrifice.
