Washington June 3. The United States plans a million dollar expedition to the Antarctic to land and claim the continent. Admiral Richard E. Byrd is expected to head the expedition, with Congress early next session funding about 340000 for the Interior Department for this purpose. Government officials say other nations plan expeditions, and the U. S. seeks to be first to possess the lands, citing Antarctica’s coal deposits and strategic importance.

June 3. A part time year and friend of long standing was detained for questioning in the death of Miss Rose Neary a well known spinster found strangled in her side apartment. Donovan a street conductor admitted knowing Neary for years and said the two were secretly involved for money he borrowed 406 last Monday. Neary 40 had an income from an estate and was devout in church. Her body lay bound on the floor of the furnished room and the apartment appeared locked from the inside. Police noted the broken door.
