Weather bulletin notes cloudy skies with fog then partly cloudy and warmer this afternoon. Tonight will be partly cloudy and a bit cooler. Thursday brings mostly sunny and warm conditions with highs near 83 to 88 and a near 10 percent precipitation chance. Winds will be light and variable from 6 to 12 mph today tonight and Thursday.
Audie Murphy the highly decorated World War II hero and actor will be buried Monday at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors after a Hollywood funeral in Atlanta. The crash that killed him also claimed five others. The Army has filed murder charges against Brig. Gen. John W. Donaldson for events in Vietnam near My Lai era, with further investigations into civilian deaths during 1968.
Dent Construction will close a three quarter mile section of old road 52 leading to US 52 north at 8 a.m. Monday June 7. Access north may only be gained via Roads 39 or 32 from Lebanon for about three months during Interstate 65 work. Mayor Campbell said Weber Road east of Mar Lee Manor remains usable and signs will warn drivers at Camp Street Lafayette Avenue. Southbound traffic may continue into Lebanon from US 52 at the north end.
Reinhold Niebuhr a leading Protestant theologian of the 20th century and advisor to many leaders died after a long illness at 78. The Stockbridge Mass funeral home retirement marked his final years as a writer and mentor to Arthur Schlesinger Jr. McGeorge Bundy Hans Morgenthau Dean Acheson and James Reston.
New York veteran Fred A. Pertes aged 69 reunited with his parrot Cor Torrita after paying a 500 dollar reward. The bird disappeared from his car during a chess game at a Golden Age club and was found near a water fountain by a neighbor’s son. Price, who had sold the parrot, agreed to split the reward after seeing posters.
Indiana Alcoholic Beverage Commission Chairman John R. Smock said the agency will enforce the fair trade law to curb discounts and freebies that favor certain retailers. The move could lead to citations and possible suspensions, with revenue checks to verify reported under the table benefits. Smock notes the law's enforcement but questions its overall merit.
A 20 member Citizen Study Committee urged delaying any school building project. They opposed a $4.9 million junior high plan proposed by Shavers & Co. with tax hikes of about $1.06 annually, and discussed phased options cutting costs by removing the gym and auditorium.
The Lebanon Community School Board will hold a 7 30 p m special public meeting Monday to announce terms offered in teachers negotiations and to decide on constructing a new middle school. Dr R W Hardin said a board committee will meet with teachers before the session to seek agreement for the 1972 term and the architect will be told whether to continue with district building plans or shelve them.
