Walter O Leary, 60, longtime Kenwood hotel clerk, was shot to death at his desk while reading a religious periodical. Police say the killing occurred during a robbery attempt after a turbulent Senate session on a $1.5 billion relief bill in Washington.

Otto C. Rohde of Toledo, vice president and chief engineer of Champion Spark Plug, died in Indianapolis City Hospital from a fractured skull suffered during qualifying for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway 500 mile race. Rohde was injured when a flaming car struck the racing vehicle he was adjusting. Two other people were killed at the Speedway that day. The 500 mile race itself was marred by deaths and serious accidents.
In Poway California on June 2 Frank T Ayres 47 chief boatswain's mate on the U S S Dallas was shot and killed at home by his 15 year old daughter after a night of drinking and quarrel with his wife and three children neighbors told investigators the sheriff said Ayres was slain with a shotgun.
Rome June 2 the Vatican withdrew its nancio from Berlin and Germany recalled its ambassador. Both sides left their Chargés dAffaires in place and described the rupture as a vacancy. A Vatican spokesman called the move a sad affair with Europe affected. Cardinal Mundelein’s Chicago speech had drawn German protest and a demand for apologies.
