Boone County Council Rejects Local Option Tax 7-0
Boone County Council voted seven to zero to reject imposing a local option income tax starting July 1. No member voiced support, though some questioned the need given a new four percent peak sales tax to relieve property taxes. The council will meet in June to discuss a potential January 1, 1974 start. Deadline today looms for Indiana counties to act on the tax with many counties already opposing.

Prison Slaying Suspects Under Heavy Guard
A grievous incident at Holmesburg prison ended with Warden Curran and Deputy Warden Fromhold dead and Capt. Taylor injured. Two Black Muslim inmates, Bowen and Burton, were subdued after stabbing officials during a grievance hearing. Guards overwhelmed the attackers while over 250 officers secured the scene. Bowen faced trial for a 1971 police slaying. Burton had prior convictions related to a 1970 park police killings.

Lebanon School Board Proposes Two Pay Plans for Teachers
Lebanon School Board presented two alternative salary proposals to teachers and reviewed CTA offers. One plan adds 50 dollars to the starting index for about 7200 yearly, costing 42000 with a 2.96 percent rise, while a second plan delays raises for two years with a 4.08 percent overall hike after year three, costing 58000. The district also considers extending the salary index from 16 to 17 years for MA and 9 to 10 for BS degrees. Teachers proposed starting salaries of 7800 or 7400 under different index bases, but negotiations continue amiably as posts open in elementary and junior high science and math.

Former Boone Resident Delporte Dies After Tractor Accident
Charles Michael Delporte a 28 year old Lafayette resident and former Boone County native was found crushed beneath a tipping farm tractor along a Tippecanoe County road. He died of a crushed chest and broken neck. He served in the U. S. Air Force with duty in Japan and Vietnam. Surviving are his wife Michele, his mother, and a brother. Funeral arrangements include services at Hartford City and Lafayette area churches with memorials to Boy Scouts or the Tippecanoe County Conservation Club.

Man Harmed By Electrical Lines At Local Children's Home Gym
About 12 50 p m today Nole Thompson age 49 of 1044 Sheffield Indianapolis was struck by live electric lines while on the roof of the new gym at the Methodist Children's Home. He was thrown to his back and rushed to Witham by the Rescue Unit. Condition not known at press time but not believed serious. He received treatment in the emergency unit.
