Trusty Slain In Gunbattle With Police
In La Porte Indiana a jail trusty described as prepared for rehabilitation was killed in a gunfight on a drive in restaurant parking lot. A policeman was wounded as Harry Wildhart Jr aged 21 from Michigan City exchanged shots with officers. Sheriff Arnold sustained a head wound but recovered and left hospital. Wildhart had been outside jail duties earlier and tried to flee when approached by officers. The confrontation ended after he fled into a cement bunker then took cover at the restaurant before lasting efforts to persuade surrender. Continued on page 4.

Damages Mount To $13,000 In Holiday County Crashes
A quiet holiday weekend in Lebanon and Boone County saw about $13,000 in damages from multiple city and county wrecks. Minor injuries occurred in one crash on State Road 47 near Lebanon and a few other fender-benders caused scattered damage but no fatalities or fires were reported.

Sedate ceremonies marked Memorial Day as Boone County observed at over two dozen cemeteries. More than 2,500 deceased servicemen received flags. Veteran groups held rites at Oak Hill and visited Hopewell Elizaville and Browns Wonder Cemeteries. About 400 flags waved on homes and businesses. Officials timed closings varied. state law may fix observances on Mondays.

Lebanon summer school enrollment tops six hundred fifty
Gordon V. Ruff Lebanon School Superintendent announced the summer session begins Monday June 8 with about 650 students enrolled. Classes for grades 7 12 meet at Lebanon High School with 15 classes and 13 teachers in place 50 students in two courses. Tuition for out of district pupils is 50 for a two hour class and 100 for two courses with only book and supply charges for Lebanon residents.

Three Allied Positions Hit By Commies In Dalat
Communist forces shelled three Allied sites in Dalat including a U S artillery camp a South Vietnamese militia center and Lien Khuong Air Field in the Central Highlands city 145 miles from Saigon. Casualties were light with 16 dead 32 wounded among South Vietnamese and 47 guerrillas killed. An American nun was slain and a helicopter was shot down injuring four Marines.

Wolf Shot Saturday On Boone Farm Near Dover
A 40 pound wolf was shot Monday in a field west of Dover near Boone Farm. David McKinney found the animal while plowing, then returned home for a gun. The wolf, described as wolf like a police dog with long teeth, had moved to a neighbor’s field. Neighbors report prior stock losses since February and recall wolves roaming in pairs in the area. The captured animal looked thin and haggard despite the division of blame for the livestock losses.
