Public auctions will sell two Leba non Community School District properties no longer used. Whites town land minimum $2000 and Perry Central land $3000. a portion at Whitestown not sold due to condemnation for a public park. Perry Central site auction follows at 10 a.m. on June 21.
Bids for replacing downtown sidewalks at multiple locations are due in the mayor's office on June 12. The project covers west Memorial Park sidewalks and south Camp Street under separate contracts, with a main contract including Adler Store, Sugar Bowl, Apple Shoe Shop, and many other local businesses and churches. The Lebanon Chamber of Commerce backs the undertaking to support downtown commerce.
Scouts from Boone and Clinton Counties join 28 units including six Cub Packs from Zionsville Whitestown Lebanon and two Lebanon Boy Scout Troops plus three more from Boone for a full day event June 3 at the 4 H Fairgrounds. Girl Scouts and district booths eight exhibits highlight the program with a Pinewood Derby race and a campfire close of day wiener roast and marshmallow treats. Scout leaders and commissioners meet tonight at 6 30 pm for a Roundtable as units prepare for setup and viewing by the public.
Lebanon police investigated a two car crash at Green and Meridian Streets about 6 20 p m involving Pauline Giles 50 and Mike L Hankins 17 Hankins was cited for driving without a licensed driver with him while operating a novice permit Giles car a 1950 Mercury was a total loss and Hankins vehicle loss estimated at 300. Also note a civil notice: Lebanon Building Inspector moves to Lafayette Avenue garage with new hours and contact 482 2440.
Washington reports that the Federal Home Loan Bank Board allows 5000 savings and loan associations to keep passbook savers at 4.75 percent and certificates at 5.25 percent after June 30, keeping savers happy but dampening mortgage relief for home buyers. Higher long-term rates loom as demand for bonds grows and inflation fears persist.
In Boston UPI report the NCC study cites Protestantism as passing social action to specialists while Roman Catholicism shows community responsiveness. Rev Dr John E McCaw of Drake University warns of dangers to an American Church and possible loss of vitality amid religious pluralism and political manipulation.
U.S. Marines on the North South Vietnam border report 2,941 Americans killed wounded or missing last week, the second straight weekly casualty record. Air actions rise with 36 planes shot down in May and 27 MIGs shot down, while a 7th Fleet ship bombards a Communist coastal stronghold northeast of Saigon.
May in the Lebanon area averaged 56.22 degrees with a 71 degree high on the 27th and a 30 degree low on the 3rd. Precipitation totaled 4.08 inches, below the 4.30 inch normal, while the year to date reached 14.27 inches. Frost on two days and 321 degree days were noted, with ground temperature reaching 50 degrees on the 26th signaling seed germination.
Fred G. Taylor formerly a rural mail carrier in Texas died early this morning at English Nursing Home in Lebanon. He was 77. Obituary appears on page 4.
A 14-year-old boy died near Medaryville when a motorcycle struck a tree in Teaberry Hill woods while attempting a high speed pass between trees. A 16-year-old passenger was unharmed. The private-property accident was not a highway fatality.
The Rev. James D. Butler 25 is named new minister of the Methodist Church at Thorntown and will preach his first service June 4. A Indiana native and graduate of the University of Evansville and Delaware Ohio seminary, he and his wife Becky with their young son plan to move June 9. The Rev. Charles E. Burton, Thorntown pastor for three years, departs to join First Methodist Church of South Bend as associate minister and will attend the June 4 service.
A 20 year old Boone County man and two companions were captured near Mt. Vernon Missouri yesterday two days after escaping from a Medaryville Indiana work camp. They face FBI questioning on a Dyer Act transport of a stolen car across state lines. Robert V. Allen RR 1 Zionsville and two other inmates, J L Henburger and Charles Roby both 20, were reported missing Monday. Allen had been sentenced in Boone County to 1 to 10 years for forgery and check cashing tied to a Chicago auto theft. The stolen vehicle was later found near Allen’s home. Authorities reported no resistance at capture.
British Prime Minister Harold Wilson met with President Johnson and Canadian PM Lester Pearson in Washington and Ottawa to push for open Gulf of Aqaba shipping amid rising Middle East tensions. France opposed signing a declaration. Israels fears over possible poison gas and shifts in Cold War alignments added to the crisis as Arab-Asian leaders pledged support for Nasser. A Swiss tourist office secretary thwarted a gunman on Market Street in San Francisco.
