Hoosier rescued from perilous cave ordeal in Utah
James Dowling, 22, UC graduate student from Connersville Indiana, dangled for eight hours in Neggs Cave near Salt Lake City the nation deepest cave. A three hour rescue pulled him from a 400 foot level to a ledge and he was taken to a Salt Lake City hospital in critical condition. Two companions, John Wood and Paul Gerhard both 22 graduates, aided by University of Utah climbers, helped initiate the rescue and notify authorities. The nine person team faced a dangerous ascent and continued the operation to save Dowling through mid afternoon.

Two small planes crashed within five miles of each other in Indianapolis, killing Bernard Moran 54 of Rock Island Illinois and his son Terry 18. Shareholders to Vote on Plan June 12
The acquisition of Advance State Bank by Boone County State Bank was approved by the State Department of Banking Institutions. Boone County President Henry Walters said the merger aims to boost deposits and loans in the Advance area with financial guidance. A July 12 vote by 45 shareholders holding about 250 shares will decide the sale in favor or against. FDIC audit and survey follow after the vote before finalization. Not disclosed is the exact purchase price. The Advance board, led by Glen H Waters, previously voted to join Boone County. Waters, longtime president, noted rising business in Advance.
