Miss Mary Ruth Palmer a former Lebacen resident and longtime music teacher died today in Robert Long Hospital Indianapolis after Hodgkin's disease. Born in Anderson she lived in Lebanon before moving to Anderson for work. Survivors include sister-in-law Martha Jane Palmer and nephew George O Palmer III. Funeral arrangements at Walton Heide in Anderson with burial at Oak Hill. Donations to a music student scholarship are requested in lieu of flowers.
An Indianapolis man, Jack Colvin, 22, faces a rape charge after a May 2 assault in a Lebanon woman's apartment. The Marion County sheriff's office reports he entered the home at about 5 p.m as she slept, attacked her, and fought with her until she escaped with a butcher knife. Her four month old child slept unharmed. Continued on Page Four.
The Textile Workers Union of America with about 220000 members urged Democratic National Convention delegates to nominate Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts. The union labeled Kennedy a down to earth yet far seeing liberal who can provide dedicated leadership for the nation’s tough demands. The endorsement marks an unusual move amid AFL CIO policy against early endorsements.
Boone County native James A Parish died Tuesday afternoon at Witham Hospital at 85. A Lebanon resident since birth he worked in cement and building trades for decades and served on the County Council for two years. He married Maude E Neff in 1909 and survived by his wife and daughter Mary Frances Quinton. a brother and two sisters preceded him.
Maude Gillan dies at 10 30 pm Tuesday at her home southwest of Thorntown after a brief illness. The death, caused by a heart attack, followed three months of declining health. Funeral services set for 2 pm Friday at the Thorntown Christian Church with Rev Donald Hainer officiating. Burial in Maple Lawn Cemetery. She was born in Allen County Kentucky to James and Mary Richey and married Charles T Gillan in Barren County Kentucky on June 9 7. The family moved from Kentucky to Montgomery County Indiana in 1916 and from Darlington to Thorntown in 1920. Survivors include her husband and seven children: William, Robert, Ward Devan, Mrs. Mary Frances Joseph, Mrs. Gladys Thrasher, Mrs. Lois Lance, and Mrs. Jane Holmes, plus a brother John and four half brothers. Also 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A son Lester Gillan died in World War II. Obituary notes a sister and another sibling preceded her in death. Friends may call at Russell & Hursh funeral home in Thorntown from 7 pm tonight. The body will be moved to the church at 11:30 am for services.
Earl W Kintner former Princeton attorney now head of the Federal Trade Commission will address the Indiana University law alumni banquet honoring Associate Dean Henry B Witham of the Indianapolis Law Division. Witham, who came to Indiana in 1946 as associate dean and professor of law, will retire July 1 from administrative duties at the Indianapolis Division but will remain professor of law. The event, part of a four day commencement weekend, will be at 8:30 p.m. in the LA Union Building ahead of Monday morning degree awards.
A Washington AP dispatch reports dozens of expense bills by current and former congressmen were altered to mask purposes such as resort trips, nightlife, and luxury liner tips. Records in the House disbursing office were public but later sealed, with alterations appearing on hotel and bar charges linked to Rep. Oren Harris and Rep. Omar Burleson, who oversee expense accounts.

A Marion County jury awarded 13 year old Diana Leigh Timmons of Lebanon $3,000 for a broken collar bone from an Indianapolis crash on September 24, 1959 that killed her mother Orpha Mae House days before she was to join her husband in France. The panel also granted $500 to James Timmons for his daughter's services. The driver Estelle Ewing was found at fault.

NASA testified that high flying weather aircraft have completed over 200 flights totaling about 264000 miles since 1956. Flights occurred in the United States Western Europe Turkey and Japan with instrumented planes on commercial and military aircraft. NASA says operations are for research not spying and involves coordination with foreign airlines and governments. Observations span the globe, including instruments on Pan American and TWA jets. The Senate inquiry ties to the Khrushchev era spying tensions and the downing of a U2.
