Tokyo reports Japan is prepared to sign separate peace treaties with western powers, excluding Russia. The Foreign Office statement links postwar aims to independence and equality, noting the United States is seen as the most likely first signer.
The Friendly City Garden Club announces its annual Flower Show for Friday June 9 in St Josephs school gym. Entries will be received 8 30 to 11 a m in all classifications with four junior classes for entrants aged 12 to 21. Judging by Mrs Norvin Strickland of Indianapolis will close the morning session with show hours 3 to 9 p m. Several local florists will display group arrangements as a feature.
Washington bulletin reports Defense Secretary Johnson asking Congress to extend the draft act for three years with no attached conditions. He, along with President Truman and the Joint Chiefs, oppose a House plan requiring congressional go ahead to induct. In Tokyo, the Japanese Communist party calls for a nationwide general strike Saturday to protest the arrest and trial of eight Japanese for attacking five American soldiers.
The Standard Manufacturing and Sales tractor, weighing 154 pounds with a two horsepower Briggs Stratton motor and automotive differential, will be shown at Boone County Hardware on Friday and Saturday. The unit, owned by the Lebanon Lions club, will appear in the Recreation Day Parade and be given away at the Lions fish fry.
Attorneys begin final arguments in the murder trial of Frankie Miller charged with killing Leland Holliday after alleged branding and an affair. Mil ler, 29, testified about abuse and a personal pact to wed, but Holliday’s interest shifted to another woman. The case, with three-hour limits for each side, was not expected to go to the jury today.
Plans for the annual city wide Recreation Day Parade Thursday Junees opening the summer recreation season announced by H H Feldman director of Community Service. The parade begins 6 p.m. at the Baptist church proceeding to Memorial Park ball diamond with police escort mayor's car LES pep band motor bikes bicycles teams Lions band floats and trucks of merchants organizations and individuals in the march. Montgomery Ward offers a new bicycle as grand prize plus other prizes in the velo division. Entries available from Ward's sports department. The feature attraction is the annual softball game between the Lions and Rotary.
Frank Walker of Indianapolis yesterday was elected president of Marott Shoe Store. He will assume the post July 1 after resigning as executive assistant for the president of Indianapolis Railways Inc. Walker, a Butler University graduate, has long been connected with Marott's and serves on several boards.
About 1000 youths from behind the iron curtain slipped into West Berlin to hear forbidden American jazz and join an American style quiz show. They brought back gifts of shirts and socks and enjoyed tunes like Wonderful and Music Maestro Please, despite the ban on Western music in the Soviet zone. The event was organized by American controlled REA S radio broadcasts aimed at behind the iron curtain audiences.
Washington reports the 1950 census is about 93 percent complete with Roy V. Peel stating the population total around 191 million. About 223,000 of 230,000 districts finished, delays noted in the Dakotas Wyoming Montana and Minnesota due to poor roads and food shortages. The census will finish in two to three weeks sooner than 1940 and state totals by county and large cities will be released as preliminary figures.
Washington reports the administration seeks power to sell American arms to any nation, removing current limits that favor allied states. The plan would extend the military assistance program for another year and could permit arms shipments to Southeast Asia, a shift drawing congressional scrutiny.
Nine thousand Communist youth delegates to Western Germany from Berlin submitted to registration and medical exams after Western forces warned they would meet force with force. The bluff was called at the border near Luebeck and in Berlin as Communists backed down from a planned Faust rally Putsch. Russia limits canal charges to two per day as retaliation.

Canterbury College students under the local Chamber of Commerce conducted a city wide college extension survey in Lebanon. About 400 homes were surveyed with guides from high school girls and 150 plus people showed interest in courses for degree seeking students and adults seeking culture. Courses include business, history, English, public health, psychology, creative writing, literature, pre engineering, art, journalism, math, and more. The proposed price is roughly 11.4 per semester hour.
A navy patrol plane crashed in dense fog at Quonset Point naval air station while attempting an emergency landing. Nine of eleven aboard were killed, with the pilot and co pilot severely injured. Names withheld pending notification. The twin engine craft landed hard, overturned and burned.
Federal police raided the Communist party headquarters in central Buenos Aires late last night, arresting 30 men and six women. The Communists were charged with holding a meeting without government permission.
Dr. Josef Nestaval, 48, a former government official and key plot figure, admitted spying for the United States during the mass trial of 33 Czechs accused of overthrowing the Communist regime. He joined co defendants Mi lada Horakova in pleading guilty to the indictment as time ran short.
Government buying to support egg prices breaks records for the second straight week. Farmers complain that prices are kept too low while production rises seven percent and consumer demand remains weak. Agriculture officials note May farm price averaged 29.6 cents a dozen, the lowest in six years, even as government purchases of dried egg powder reach 181 million eggs this week.
President Truman asked Congress for 1,222,500,000 in foreign military aid for fiscal 1951 to sustain the free world against totalitarian forces. The request, in the annual report on the mutual defense assistance program, notes aid would aid China and other nations, with standby authority for emergencies. Secretary Acheson outlined parallel Western defense aims and testifies on the plan, while Western ministers pursue a balanced force for mutual defense.
Five youths were killed and a sixth seriously injured when their car collided with the rear of a heavy truck after a high school graduation in Harlan Iowa. The truck driver said headlights were out. Victims include Joan Anderson Robert Brockman Mary Ann Lindstrom and Charles Ocean all of Corley and nearby communities.
