The Topeka flood leaves 176 to 200 dead, thousands homeless, and millions in property damage. Rescue crews wade knee deep through water as fires and high currents hinder efforts while city officials estimate casualties and continue evacuations. The Kansas River remains volatile as salvage and recovery proceed.
In Des Moines steady rain for three days worsened flooding with several thousand people displaced. Levees hold after partial breaches yet many businesses and homes are cut off as water isolates areas. Thieves in boats plunder stock in the business district. one officer fought a robber who escaped. Police report multiple arrests as railways and streetcars suspend service for days.
Kansas City and Armourdale endure the worst flood in history as the Kaw and Missouri rivers swell nearly four feet above 1881 levels. Armourdale losses reach about 2.5 million, with Argentine and other suburbs hit hard. Des Moines River breaks records in Ottumwa with 21 feet 5 1/2 inches of water, while Arkansas River floods Muskogee. Peruvian election results point to Manuel Candamo as president. Indicted for a March 18 double murder in Aurora Ind Wheeler was arrested in Indianapolis. Authorities allege he poured coal oil on Mrs M Schmidt and set her afire then burned Thomas Johnsons home and later found Johnsons body in the Ohio River. Jealousy tied to both killings. Wheeler not bound over at hearing. grand jury investigation ongoing.
Commonwealth's Attorney Byrd and Thomas Marcum announced that trials would be held this term in Jackson Kentucky. Byrd declined a venue change citing safety concerns for witnesses and troop presence. Jurors will come from other counties and the defense may seek a continuance.

Terre Haute Indiana June 1 Eddie Smith aged twenty dies from injuries suffered in the Fontanet powder mill explosion last week bringing the death toll to four. Coroner Tabor seeks the cause amid frequent accidents and questions the mill management. A witness testified no torch or lantern was near the scene though another said there was. Officials push to absolve owners of legal responsibility.
Goshen Indiana June 1 The German Baptists national conference convened eight miles west of Goshen for a four day session with a very large attendance last year Manchester drew 20 000 people. Services are in a 100 by 960 foot tent and a dining tent seating 1 000. Free board and lodging will be provided by the committee and county costs run to 2 000. Preaching was held Sunday and today at Nappanee Wakeman and other places. Tuesday will be devoted to business sessions.
Muneta company tapped a monster Indiana well on James Meek’s Parker farm spouting for an hour. Observers estimated 1006 barrels daily, claiming the largest Indiana well and perhaps Ohio. Incidents follow include a boy’s accidental shooting near Huntington killing 13 year old Harry Brown, and a man’s death after a fall in Gibson county with James Doncen aged eighty.
