The Matinee Racing Club, with L. W. Hinson as president and Guy Wis as secretary, has a 30 member roster of track owners. The first program of five events will take place next Friday afternoon at the Fair Grounds with free admission and invitations to ladies.
Next week begins with the Hut Bailey Stock Company presenting Week's engagement at Air Theater. The company boasts a record attendance and top-tier staging. Monday night offers Little Bees for the first time in this city, featuring continuous action and relatable characters across each act.
North Salem Page reports an appliance to overcome separators stopping traffic on roads. The device resembles two large plow shares placed under the separator so that when lifted it shifts quickly. The item draws many orders from threshing men, with more inquiries than supply.
General James Bingham and Congressman Charles B. Landis will address Hamilton county settlers at Noblesville on Saturday August 8. E E of Noblesville will preside and C A Barker of Eagletown will lead the meeting. From 10000 to 20000 locals from Hamilton and Boone counties attend the annual old settlers gatherings.
Indianapolis Press team defeated the Lebanon Indians at the court house with a 7 to 1 score. Postofice players Burns and Fiasex starred, while George Darnell Morris reported for the Indianapolis Press. The Press team, with a strong win record, remains prominent in the city sports scene.
Announcement reports the approaching marriage of Cecil Kibbey and Mabel Claire Abney. Kibbey, son of Rev. W. P. Kibbey, is principal of New Ross High School. Abney, daughter of Mist Abney, has lived with Mr and Mrs John M. Shelley near Jamestown for about two years. wedding set for August.
Ed Beck living four miles southwest of town suffers ten days of stomach and bowel trouble and is in very serious condition. His brotherinlaw George Beck, Lafayette avenue, is affected. Mrs John C Davis sister of Mrs Beck, near Rosston, with tuberculosis, death expected at any time.
In Frankfort Indiana on July 25 Hillisburg residents formed a Good Citizens League after last Sunday's tragedy involving Clarence Jones who killed Claude Pruitt and died by suicide. The group aims to stop liquor shipments, with a vigilance committee led by William Woods and others to confiscate and destroy any beer or whisky received. The league, organized at a Methodist church mass meeting, elected Rev Nathanial Cripe president and Eyrial Edwards treasurer.
The Advance Hustler reports Uncle Joe Sandlin aged 63, a Civil War veteran of the 11th Indiana Infantry, planned burial in a Red Men's coffin. A coffin was displayed at Red Men hall with a self written testament, a grave lot in Old Union cemetery, and a monument for his first wife. He has lived in Advance for 18 years.
Prof. James McIntosh chosen principal to fill vacancy from Prof. John T. Har Finn. Finn resigns to join State Reformatory at Jeffersonville. McIntosh formerly led Kirk-Nia Schools and will move to Darlington to begin duties around September first.
The Court of Honor met at the GAR Hall last night and arranged a big meeting for next Friday to initiate a class of ten under George Williams, Deputy Supreme Chancellor Stay. Cream will be served and all members urged to attend. Rev. John Huckleberry visited Thursday with friends including Mrs. Nancy Campbell of North Park Street, who has been seriously ill since January and was a former member of Huckleberry’s church in Witanville.
The Thorntown Argus-Enterprise notes General Anson Mills retired from the US Army will meet with the Old Boys next Monday week. Mills, a hero of the old flag, helped defend liberties of a free country and will clasp hands with former associates from over sixty years ago.
Mrs. Solomon Barnhart of Thorton town received a telegram stating her brother Frank Goodrich had been drowned near Mount Pleasant Texas last Saturday. No details have been learned to date.
Frank Barker formerly county surveyor completes a chiropractic course in Oklahoma and plans to practice osteopathy in Crawfordsville, possibly at Crawfordsville.
Purdue entomologist J Troop warns farmers of a wheat joint worm outbreak across southeastern counties. The insect, a small black parasitoid in the Chateididae family, has damaged crops, cutting yields to near zero in some fields. Professor F continues the bulletin outlining identification and impact.
NOT A CANDIDATE NEW YORK July 25 William Randolph Hearst arrived from Europe and was asked if he would accept the Independence League nomination if the league supported him. He replied that he cannot run, having given his word under no circumstances will I be a candidate and I will abide by it.
Thorntown dealers in Toniea shipped their beverage stock out of town soon after an unfavorable mayor's court decision in Frankfort. Vernie Frank joined the Daughters of Rebekah Lodge in a ceremony last night. Republican county chairman A. W. I. Newcomer received word that a special train from Indianapolis to Cincinnati operated over the line of the Hy & D. railroad.
The Marion county hearing on a new 20000 dollar school house at New Augusta opened with both sides arguing. Key figures included trustee H E Hill and advisory board members who favor the new building while opponents testified. Architect Elmer Dunlap questioned safety and feasibility noting possible drainage and cellar issues near Little Eagle Creek. The hearing resumes Monday after a teacher examination. A N Holloway and M J Holloway were noted travelers en route to Thorn Town.
In Fadua Italy a mob hanged Francisco Vergant after he mutilated his former lover Eloise Ferrari by tearing out her tongue for breaking a promise to marry. Dragged by a horse for two miles, his body was crushed. Ferrari's fate remains grim as authorities report the victim will die.
Josep Fleming, a thrifty farmer living east of Thorntown, died Thursday July 23 1908 at 2 p m following an as sumption. His funeral will be held at Salem church Sunday at 11 a m with interment at New cemetery Thorn town. He was forty one and left a wife and three children.
Services will be held at the county farm tomorrow afternoon. All wishing to attend should meet at 2 o'clock at the First Baptist church where conveyances will be provided. The invitation is extended to all.
Erakine reports a five acre wheat field averaging 45 bushels per acre. He notes the general wheat average in the region is about 20 bushels per acre, as cited by the Advance Hustler.
In the American Association Minneapolis beat Indianapolis 5 to 4 and Louisville defeated Columbus 5 to 3 with St Paul and Toledo weathering rain. In the American League Detroit edged Cleveland 4 to 6 and in the National League Cincinnati won 3 to 2 over Brooklyn while New York took Pittsburgh 2 to 1 and Chicago defeated Brooklyn 2 to 1 with Philadelphia at St Louis rained out.
An incident occurred Tuesday evening at Advance when Ross Caldwell tried to jump a horse. He toppled, the animal struck his head and shoulder, leaving him severely hurt but later reported as being all right. Santestoma was present at the scene.
