Court in Payton Tennessee set a 5000 bond for Clarence Darrow after Judge John T. Daulston held him in contempt for remarks during Friday session. The contempt followed a clash over religion and science in the Scopes trial context.
In Dayton Tenn on July 20 eight esteemed scientists presented massive affidavits totaling about 65 000 words to defend evolution and challenge fundamentalist religious inter pretation of the Bible describing it as a human historical document and a textbook for religion.
New York reports three heavyweight title defenses may be signed by Jack Dempsey and Tex Rickard. Rickard expects Dempsey to return from Wilmington to finalize deals with negotiations pointing to a possible October title bout against Gene Tunney at Yankee Stadium.
Tokio reports 2000 casualties with floods spreading in South Korea. Kankang river dyke breach, Etcho station warns of a terrible situation. Rail links from Usan to Fukdan halted and relief work hampered. Osaka reports 200 bodies recovered with estimates of $40 million in damage and 20,000 houses damaged.
In Calcutta and Chilka Lake district heavy monsoon rain for twenty days caused the Nahanadi to flood the lake increasing water levels. Villagers drowned or left homeless as rising waters trapped people, many seeking refuge in the hills.
Maj. F. C. Fegan of Washington head of the recruiting service of the United States Marine Corps visited the Indianapolis recruiting office today. He is national adjutant of the Marine Corps League and will speak to the Indianapolis Marine Corps League at the Hotel Denison tonight.
The Rev. A. E. Cowley pastor of the First Baptist church will teach at the Indiana Baptist Assembly at Franklin College from August 17 to 28. He will lead a course on Great Books of the Bible and oversee vesper services.
The Morgan county sheriff notified Sheriff Saunders that a Lebanon motor party was held up near Martinsville Sunday. Names of those involved are unknown, but suspects are believed to be the bandits. Victims are asked to reveal identities or notify Chief Budd immediately.
Indianapolis reports five fatalities and fifteen injuries from weekend traffic crashes across the state. Victims include William James, 20, of Chicago, killed on the Dunes highway near Gary. Frank Supernae, 20, seriously hurt. ten year old Joseph Hosford fatally struck on a scooter in Fort Wayne. Frank Fullman, 15, of Chicago, died in LaPorte hospital after a bicycle collision. Frank Ellis killed near Lafayette after mistaking train lights for auto headlights.
July 20 Chicago police hunted several boys who started a vast oil fire along the Chicago river at Clay street. A barge Reliable carrying 90,000 gallons of gasoline exploded as flames spread across the water, destroying a river tug and shattering windows for blocks. Fireboats and hundreds of firefighters battled for six hours to prevent tanks and plants from catching.
Michigan City Indiana July 20 The state of Indiana will have two governors during the month of August. Governor Len Small of Illinois has rented a cottage at Long Beach near here and will spend his vacation in Indiana.
Chicago July 20 Russell Scott, 30, sentenced to hang Friday, declares faith in God as Detroit telegraph operator James M Ball repudiates a story that cleared him of killing Joseph Maurer, a Chicago drug clerk. Ball admits fabricating the witness tale saying Robert Scott fired the shots. Scott’s lawyers prepare affidavits of new testimony to convince Governor Len Small of his innocence.
Miss Lois Moore married Hugh Bennett of Columbus Ohio in a home Saturday ceremony at 3 45 pm in the bride’s mother’s house. Rev Homer Ivey read the service, with Ruth Perkins playing piano and Frances Shahan as flower girl. Guests included Bennett and Shahan families from Ohio and Kentucky. The couple honeymooned to the Canadian Rockies and will reside at 1319 Lincoln Road Columbus Ohio after October.

He says he merely followed the text and denies teaching that man descended from a monkey.

Bloomington Indiana July 20 more than two hundred persons have already registered for the three weeks short term of the Indiana University summer session. The short term, introduced for the first time last summer, is intended for teachers who need additional work each summer to retain their licenses.
Ulen Country Club golfers fell 39 to 38 at Attica Sunday on Harrison Hills. The Attica course is new and rough with hard ground and uncertain greens, making scoring high. Fred Siess led Lebanon with 90, followed by Winson Jones 92 and Will Ritchie 94. Attica club hospitality noted with luncheon in a small but well equipped clubhouse. The Lebanon party totaled multiple players including Fred Rhodes, Frank Wooley, Noble Shelby, and Frank Beaven among many others.
Trustees report Boone county lists 6654 male voters with 20 colored and 6634 white across twelve townships. Center leads with 2416 voters and 15 colored. Sugar Creek 639. Eagle 607. Perry 216. Constitution required periodic counts for congressional representation, though extending female suffrage makes it largely moot.
In Frankfort Indiana a temporary understanding paused action on an injunction suit against the Hiner Red Bull Bus line by Terre Haute Indianapolis and Eastern Traction Company. The traction firm claimed the bus line operated illegally after the State Public Service Commission refused a certificate.

A four member Sullivan county committee headed to Indianapolis to seek Governor Ed Jackson's removal of Prosecutor Norval Harris. Harris recently paid a $10 fine after pleading guilty to operating a gambling game found during a raid by sheriff's officers and prohibition agents at a Sullivan Legion post. It was unclear if the incident spurred the removal petition.
A stolen Maxwell sedan linked to Clarence Rankin and William Hines was found abandoned on a Thorntown lot after a chase through Crossing Lebano Kirklin Sheridan Elizaville. Noble Harrison of Kempton, posing as Ross, eluded Boone county deputies while described as a smooth speaking ex-con with a recent farm theft record. A statewide alert went out as officers search Hamilton and surrounding counties for Harrison and the car.
Fort Wayne Indiana July 20 federal dry agents seized a refrigerator car containing six thousand four hundred gallons of beer valued at twenty thousand dollars. The raid followed discovery of the contraband in a milk car labeled condensed milk.
