Dayton Tennessee wires report the Scopes trial nearly finished with Judge Raulston banning scientific evidence. Clarence Darrow faces possible contempt while Bryan toasts a likely guilty verdict for John T Scopes. Closing arguments loom as experts depart and jurors determine fate.
Indianapolis on July 18 reports fifty nine regular army officers assigned to instruct Indiana National Guardsmen during their August encampment at Camp Knox Kentucky. Five thousand guardsmen will train two weeks in service branches under Maj. Gen. Robert M. Tyndall in command with several colonels and majors named as inspectors and instructors for various units of the thirty seventh division and related brigades.
Mrs. George M. Comley received a postcard Friday carried by Roal Amundsen on his famous northern flight. She bought the card in March 1924 at Gimbel Bros Philadelphia where many were sold. The card traveled from Philadelphia to Christiania Norway to Amundsen before his Trans Polar Flight. It was postmarked Kings Bay Spitzbergen and bears two Norwegian stamps.
The Magazine of the Art World, a Chicago Evening Post supplement, showcases Mrs. J. W. Shumate of this city with a full page of illustrations. Her works gained Indiana acclaim at the Hoosier Salon and include four paintings selected for reproduction in the feature, including Through the Trees and A Gray Day.
Chicago July 18 Russell Scott a fellow millionaire faced renewed hope as Governor La Small gave six days to raise a reasonable doubt that he killed drug store clerk Joseph Maurer. A Detroit operator James M Ball telegrammed Governor Small offering to testify if sent to Chicago or Springfield saying Robert Scott shot Maurer.
Elkhart Indiana July 18 A large trunk with leaky contents was unclaimed at the police station today. Unloaded from a baggage car at the New York Central Station a small stream of liquor poured from it. The owner of a local liquor store said he knew nothing of the trunk and police seek the sender.
The Reporter's contest for Boone County's oldest newspaper ended with Walter Perrine, southeast of Lebanon, winning the year's subscription with a copy of The Massachusetts Sun issued July 17, 1776 at Worchester. Approximately a hundred papers entered over two weeks, revealing early journalism details and notices of rare editions from Ulster County Gazette to New York Daily Gazette and the Lebanon Pioneer.
Mrs. Katie Smith of near Advance died at Williams Hospital at noon aged 47 from appendicitis and complications after a ten day illness. Born in Effingham County Illinois she married James H. Smith on September 27 1895 and survives with two sons Virgil R. and Oakley near Advance. Also surviving two sisters Susie McDaniel Urbana IL Rosa Arth Hodge MO two brothers John Kampschrader Effingham IL William Kampschrader Champaign IL and one grandchild. She was active in East Christian Church Advance and its Ladies Aid Society teaching Sunday School. She came to Boone County in 1894 and resided near Advance since. Body to home near Advance. Funeral at East Christian Church Advance Sunday at 2 PM Rev W P Kibbey officiating. Burial Old Union.
Crown Point Ind July 18 The state is to finish its case today in the Anna Cunningham trial. The confession that she killed three children with arsenic would close the prosecution evidence. David Cunningham sworn as witness, carried in on a stretcher, testified he was poisoned by his mother.

Clarence Wynecoop of Brownsburg was tried in Crawfordsville city court before Mayor Earl Berry on three charges tied to a family dispute. He was found guilty of assault and battery on his father-in-law Mathew Owens, acquitted on assault and battery against his wife, and found guilty of carrying concealed weapons. The judge ruled the incident stemmed from a family quarrel and acquitted the wife-charge, noting blows and honors were evenly distributed between husband and wife.
Indianapolis officials argue that a local veterans hospital would save the federal government about sixty thousand dollars annually in travel costs. The Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce cites reduced patient travel from Indiana and nearby areas as key, and secretary John Reynolds urges support from Congressman Updike ahead of the fall session.
Porter Indiana July 18 A fire at the Columbia China Corporation plant ruined fifty thousand pieces of china ware ready for shipment. The blaze swept through the factory causing extensive damage and prompting investigations into the cause.

South Bend Indiana July 18 Rev William Atteberry Methodist minister obtained a court order restraining his brother in law and sister Mr and Mrs Ansbaugh from abducting his three year old daughter Lillian. He followed the couple to Iowa where they supposedly took the child for a ride and brought her back. The preacher took his family to Benton Harbor Michigan to keep the child safe. A temporary injunction was granted and a hearing on permanent injunction is set for next week.
From Tokio dispatches Zeoul the Korean capital with 500000 population is inundated and 5000 trapped on high ground as waters rise. Reports say 800 drowned with more in peril. Tokio island and Yong San City submerged as troops are deployed to aid.
Columbus July 18 Robert Mattingly a one legged man landed in jail today after signing contracts to buy three automobiles. The salesmen checked and found he could not pay for his next meal, exposing his financial trouble.
Indianapolis July 18 Hearing dates are rapidly set by the State Public Service Commission for pending bus and truck petitions. July 31 set for Joseph Ripper and Melvin Dillen of Fort Wayne to operate a truck line from Fort Wayne to Nappanee. August 4 set for Adeline Windser of Evansville to operate a bus between Evansville and West Baden.
A Bible Study and Evangelistic Conference for United Brethren churches opens Sunday night in a large tent at South Lebanon and Noble streets. Led by Rev. Forest A Reed, the event runs three weeks with daily sessions. Dr Samuel E Long of Indiana Central College will teach and serve as evangelist. Andrew Montgomery of Lapel handles music. participating churches include Max Beech Grove Terhune and Lebanon United Brethren.
Center Township young librarians from Boone County Schools will be entertained with a theatre party at the Colonial Theatre followed by a library party on Friday July 24. Carey and Alexander sponsors provide tickets to Jackie Coogan in The Rag Man, with refreshments and prizes for top school work. The Public Library seeks car offers to transport children from Boone County Home. Gary July 18 Indefinite delay in pavement work on Indianapolis avenue the connecting link between northern Indiana and Illinois was threatened as McAfee and Smith Bluffton contractors said they may suspend work next week due to the Whiting and East Chicago Railway Company's refusal to move tracks to the center of the pavement. Despite a year since notice the company has not complied with highway commission orders. If litigation is needed it could push completion a year. An appeal to Governor Jackson has been made by Gary Hammond and Chicago officials.
The Mad Cody Fleming Shows announce a week long engagement at the old show grounds in southwest Lebanon starting Monday. Eight shows and five riding devices including The Merry Mixin comprise the amusements. The company tours with 150 people and recently performed in Spencer on the courthouse square under American Legion auspices.
S. E. Bundy of Darlington was injured Wednesday when a leg he was working near a wagon swung suddenly and struck a post. The leg below the ankle and the foot bore the impact. Bundy was in the Binford woods near Darlington, a timber tract owned by Harry Scholler and Odie Stafford of Crawfordsville.
