Flood of gas in Scranton home kills six
In Scranton Pennsylvania early today a gas fumes disaster wiped out a family of six in a West Scranton home. Police suspect a mine cave caused a gas main rupture that allowed poisonous fumes to enter the dwelling. Across the street the Pry family narrowly escaped, being rescued after police and neighbors forced entry. Six bodies were found in the Besino residence, including the mother protecting two children, with others found on the second floor. Doctors and miners’ engineers combed the scene as investigators seek blame.

Eight Deaths Due to the Cold Wave in Metro Area
Eight deaths in New York and surrounding areas were traced to a cold wave over 24 hours. Fires, exposure and accidents caused the fatalities including a frozen merchant sleeping in a store, two sailors ashore, a body in a snow drift, a fire linked to overheated equipment that killed a family, and a woman who fell from a slippery fire escape.
