Rape Charges On Blackwood Are Dismissed
A 52 year old Zionsville man freed on two counts of rape after Hamilton County prosecutor moved to dismiss. Blackwood, indicted in Boone and Hamilton counties, was jailed since 1962 and had been on bond. The two alleged victims now adult sisters signed a letter asking for closure, citing hardship on their families.

Lebanon stores will stay open all day Thursday to aid Christmas shopping and New Year preparations. Nobre B. Waggener, executive secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, said downtown businesses usually close Thursday afternoons but extended hours will assist the public.

Muncie Girl Burns to Death in House Fire
In Muncie Indiana a three year old girl Joretta Lynn Johnson died in a frame house fire. Her sister Michelle five and father Edward Johnson twenty nine and uncle Robert Upchurch twenty two were treated for serious burns. Randy seven brother said he saw a fire in the Christmas tree and fled to a neighbor's house. Firefighters believe the blaze did not start in the tree.

Train Crashes Auto at Crossing Injuring Driver in Lebanon
A Lebanon man escaped serious injury when his car collided with a New York Central train at Patterson Street crossing. Earl Wynkoop, 47, suffered cuts to the mouth, a finger injury and knee pain as the car slid onto the tracks. The train pushed the auto about two feet despite flashers being active. In a second minor crash at North East and Fordice Streets, Donald Gene Merrill Jr., 18, and Linda Mae Mangus, 16, sustained minor damage totaling $73 and $100 respectively. No citations were issued.

Earl C. Carter Beaten and Stranded Near Lebanon
Earl C. Carter a 54 year old Frankfort salesman was beaten near the Lebanon access road to I-65 and left in freezing snow after his Cadillac was found. He was discovered by passersby around 3:30 a.m. with severe head injuries and frostbite. Carter said a following car with blinking lights thought to be police triggered the assault. Sheriff Jim McConnaha and Detective Dale McCurdy led the investigation aided by Deputy Sheriff John Denney. He was treated at Witham Hospital then Clinton County Hospital in fair condition and police recover the stolen money.
