Nova Roberts, fourteen, won the schoolwide spelling bee by holding the floor for three hours and defeating 150 peers. The event pitted Seventh and Eighth graders in a floor-spelling contest, with a silk flag as the prize. Students practiced weeks, arriving early, staying late, and spelling at home to win.
The Boone County Agricultural Association stockholders met December 4 and elected new officers. The secretary urges county pride and cooperation to strengthen the fair, revise the premium list, choose competent superintendents, and introduce new entertainments to make the event among the best in the state.
Miss Nora Roberts and Miss Leva Smith led the eighth grade to victory in a spelling contest, with Miss Roberta clinching room honors. Debate continues over declining spelling skills among high school graduates and freshmen, with critics blaming lapses in school spelling instruction and referencing historic exam results.
A remark praises Miss Roberts for her fast recall as she answered one word correctly, missing 160 other schoolmates. She is described as the daughter of Mr and Mrs R W Roberts, highlighting the commendation from observers.
Major D. F. Allen, struck by paralysis at his Frankfort offices, is holding his own per Drs. Sims and Andrews. He is conscious at times and has regained speech enough to indicate his needs. A trained nurse stays by his side as well as numerous inquiries arrive by telegrams from across Indiana.
John Millikan and his wife left Whitestown after a week with relatives for Water town Wisconsin. He recently finished a large building for Van Dams and will start another large project a 40 by 10 foot two story warehouse contracted for a Watertown company. He plans to stay until the project is complete.
Lebanon organized a debating society determined to win the trophy. The notes urge fellows to “ginger up” as Lebanon and Frankfort display spirited effort. The text ends with an unclear fragment about a topic for a triangle debate.

Minnie Cones has filed proceedings in Boone Circuit Court to punish her former husband Charles Cones for contempt. In 1902 a divorce and child custody decree ordered him to pay 375 per year for the children's support in quarterly installments. Farmers County Institute sessions promised profit for attendees in Lebanon, with instruction for farmers and the public alike.
Jesse Simpson a retired farmer living on Whitestown east side narrowly escaped a fatal accident after two freight trains blocked the switch while No. 16 east passed. He was unhurt though hurled about twenty feet, and the incident occurred Tuesday in Whitestown Indiana. Simpson is a renowned singing evangelist with extensive bookings for 1910 and a career spanning sixteen states and four foreign countries.
Uff alleges defendant failed to pay quarterly installments through December 15 1906 and all later installments except partial payments on May 25 1909 and August 27 1909. Delinquent and unpaid installments amount to 954.50. Defendant ordered to appear December 9 at 1 pm to show cause why not punished for contempt. Other cases involve quieting title judgments for plaintiffs and a commissioner ordered to release a recorded mortgage.
Capt Harry New, a frequent GOP figure in Indiana politics, declared on Tuesday that he would not accept the party chairmanship. He insisted there are others better suited and that he has no ambitions for the post while offering to aid any Republican who takes the helm. Meanwhile a separate incident reports a man narrowly avoiding harm after a passenger train arrival. Mr. Simpson, standing on the tracks, was struck by the engine’s pilot but hurled aside and escaped with a bruised arm and minor cuts, walking to Dr. Millikan’s office for evaluation.
The State Board of Accounts nears fixing the standing of applicants examined for field examiner positions. Chief Examiner W. A. De Horly says the board has not decided how many men to appoint yet. A meeting will be called in the latter part of the day.
Members of Magnolia Encampment No 4H IOOF braved extreme cold for a gathering, returning with adequate rewards for their efforts and camaraderie in spite of harsh weather conditions.
A large audience braved cold weather to hear J. P Garmong at Central Christian church. He spoke on his Trip Around the World with vivid pictures. He left for Des Moines today to return home.
Whitestown Indiana December 8 A longtime resident Mr S R Neese drove out to buy ducks and poultry then aimed for Noblesville road toward the capital. He wandered east six miles past the route, doubting a swallowed road but a nearby farmer reassured him the Noblesville road still exists. He retraced steps to the city to sell his load at a fair price and returned home, intent on forgetting the misadventure.
In Hamburg at the Kleines Grasbrook on the Elbe front two gas tanks exploded after a gasometer leak. A fire raged as escaping gas entered a retort house and exploded. At least twenty seven lives were lost with many workers missing after the blast.
The cold wave hit on schedule with 2 degrees below zero at dawn marked by the town’s best thermometers. The Weather Bureau projects fair but continued cold conditions tonight and tomorrow. Williston North Carolina reached 18 degrees below zero, a striking anomaly in the region.
Clinton County commissioners Isaac C Michaela R Aughe and Walter M Troxell with Auditor Charles Cromwell met Boone County officials in a joint session about a county line bridge. The bridge funding was approved and the money ordered paid.
The Lebanon Elks plan a two night charity musical comedy The Land of Chef at the Grand Opera House on December 16 and 17. A mixed chorus of forty voices, led by Prof Howe and wife, will headline with cast members including Bunko Berryhill Irwin Brown J W Shumate Lester F Jones Ivory Tolle and Will Craig. Mrs Howe and a sixteen woman drill team add variety, with Misses Bess Hutchings May Matthews and others. Tickets range from 25 to 75 cents and proceeds go to charity.
Secretary of State records show the New Brunswick Citizens' Telephone Company of Lebanon Indiana filed incorporation papers. Capital is $2000 to take over and operate property of the New Brunswick Mutual Telephone Company. Directors listed include H. T. Viditlo Anthony Crostrest Rollie H. Gates J. J. Evans Thomas F. Caldwell L. W. Ross and Charles C. Black.
Price at the stock yards reached 8.40 per hundred, a twenty seven year record. The rise followed a cholera epidemic and tight supply of fat hogs, with prices about five dollars higher than a year earlier.
Announcement states Truman Edwards, a clerk at the Hub Glitching Store, will marry Miss Carrie McKey, daughter of Ben F. McKay, editor of the Plonewr, this evening at the bride's home with Rev M H Appleby officiating at 6 o'clock.
