Desegregation Order Raises Negro Attendance in Suburbs
Federal Judge S Hugh Dillin issued a supplemental desegregation order affecting Boone County and other suburbs. It raises the share of Negro students from Indianapolis to 15 percent in some districts, with Zionsville expected to bus up to 240 students. The judge urged the 1974 Indiana General Assembly to enact a full plan, outlining possible transfer methods for grades 1 through 8 to reach roughly 87 percent white and 13 percent Negro across transfers, excluding Washington and Pike Townships. He argued transportation of kindergarten and special education pupils should not be required.

Rosalinda Avila a 12 year old orphan from Mexico will receive new feet after surgery for club feet at the California Podiatry Hospital next week. A Cupertino California family helped arrange the operation with a San Francisco foot surgeon and Sister Bravo at Casita de Nazaret. She will leave for temporary shelter with the Eldridges before Christmas and wear a cast for three months as she begins to walk upright for the first time.

Indian Heritage Group Elects At Thorntown
The Society for the Preservation of Our Indian Heritage reelected and elected officers for 1974 at Thorntown Methodist church. Officers include Mrs. Wilbur Bowen president James McCord 1st vice president Noble Higer 2nd vice president Mrs. Doyle Allen secretary and Mrs. William Hitch treasurer. Directors elected were Higer Jack Hutchens Mrs. Dave Zellers and Ralph W. Stark with Joe Crum reelected. The board also includes holdovers Bowen McCord Mrs. Allen Mrs. Hitch Robert Gatewood and John Lewis. Speaker Mrs. Eugene Buchanan discussed her Redbud Indian Reservation visit. The society, formed October 1972, meets the fourth Monday monthly. December meeting is canceled. Commemorative Indian plates remain for sale at local stores. Dues are $4 per family and $2 for individuals. The group plans a larger Festival of the Turning Leaves next September 28-29.

Kirby Plea Bargaining Yields Six Month Jail Sentence
Larry N Kirby 20 pled guilty to assault and battery in Boone Superior Court. Judge Paul H Johnson Jr sentenced him to six months in Indiana State Farm at Putnamville, plus a 100 fine and costs. The charge reduced from assault with intent to gratify sexual desires against a 12 year old girl in 1972. Kirby cried at sentencing, then said he is married and working. He will return Dec 21 for arraignment on a second degree burglary charge. Other arraignments included Betty Florence Steven Stucker and Stanley Creasey for burglaries and Stewart Richard Foster on a drug charge. bond issues and extradition status discussed.
