Cloudy and mild with frequent drizzle and rain today ending by late morning. Partial clearing and cooler tonight. Mostly cloudy and colder with a chance of occasional rain Wednesday. Highs 47 to 53 today, 40 to 45 Wednesday. Lows 33 to 38 tonight. Precipitation chances 70 percent today, 20 tonight.
An elderly Louisville resident died and three others were injured in a three vehicle crash at 8 10 p m on U S 52 ten miles north of Lebanon. Isaiah H Moore 91 died from skull fracture and internal injuries. Estil W Johnson 33 Edward D Young 20 and Ronald E Moore 21 were treated for multiple injuries and hospital transfers. The crash occurred when a semi driven by Laverne L Shaw pulled across northbound lanes into a crossover, blocking both lanes. Seat belts were not in use. Investigating trooper Dave Zellers and Boone County agencies assisted. This was Boone County s 12th highway fatality in 1971. Weather was misty rain and poor visibility. Damages to the semi were listed at 2000 dollars.
The Lebanon City Council agreed to meet with Lebanon Schools representatives on an access road to the new Middle School. City concerns include blocking streets during non-school hours, high construction costs, and funds not in the 1973 budget. The panel also heard lighting complaints from St Joseph Church and pollution worries near Electrocoatings plant. The Pearl Harbor remembrance section marked the 30th anniversary.
Heavy rainfall swept across Indiana in the last day, with 1 to 1.6 inches in many areas. Cities reported varied totals from 1.02 inches in Vincennes to 1.60 in Williams, while temperatures stayed in the 40s and 50s.
Boone County Commissioners agreed to offer temporary courthouse space for Santa Claus while downtown roaming was canceled due to funding gaps. The tiny house is not to be erected this year amid objections to postholiday removal. Chamber funds are unavailable though merchants may underwrite a Santa salary, leaving Lebanon without a Santa for now.
State School Superintendent John Laughlin postponed his Lebanon School visit due to Gary School District financial problems. He said the 900 minimum enrollment rule is disapproved, not tabled, and that buildings meeting safety standards can proceed with local choice. He noted Western CSD plans for Thorntown and Granville Wells face state review, with final action pending. The Western CSD board meets next Monday awaiting state ruling.
Gov. Wendell H. Ford was sworn in as Kentucky's 49th governor, marking a Democratic return after a close 58,000 vote victory over Republican Thomas D. Emberton. Lt. Gov. Julian M. Carroll also took the oath in private homes before formal ceremonies later today.
