Snowy mix moves across state with sleet and rain
Snow covers much of the state this afternoon turning to a mix of sleet and rain in the far south tonight. Temperatures drop slightly but remain mild. Tuesday brings partly cloudy skies after some early snow or rain in the extreme southeast, with a bit warmer afternoon. Lows 28 to 32, highs 35 to 40.

A weekend coating of snow and ice slowed Indiana highways and caused multiple accidents. At least three deaths were blamed on weather conditions, including two out-of-state incidents. More snow or rain was forecast, with state police warning of continued hazardous driving. Victims include Shoals couple Harry Nicholson 70 and Maggie Nicholson, Edward Mohr 38 of Marysville, Lonnie Aldridge 69 of Evansville, Arthur Doerscher 34 of Goshen, Gene Thomas 40 of Indianapolis, Mes Irma Meahl 29 of Evansville, and Jane Tucker 57 of Evansville in separate crashes near US routes 50 60 and interstates 37 44.

The annual Dental Clinic for grade school pupils, sponsored by Psi Lambda Xi, will be held Thursday December 4. Since 1991 the project has provided free yearly dental exams to about 9,800 students, with roughly $3,200 spent on followup care for low income families. Co-chairmen Mrs William Graver and Mrs Charles Slaughter lead the effort with cooperation from school principals and Drs RoW Nelson O R Pfaff MA Shaw JW Bach and RoC Walters. Each dentist oversees a school with exams at 4:39 am, assisted by sorority members.

Omer Dooley died after a two week illness Saturday at age 55. He lived on 21444 W Noble Street and died at his daughter Mrs Arthur Fine's home. Funeral services were held at Russell and Hitch with Rev RE Howell officiating and burial followed at Oak Hill cemetery. Born December 14 1870 in Boone County he was a son of Henry Clay and Maria Klingler Dooley. He had resided in Lebanon most of his life and worked as a teacher. He was preceded in death by a daughter Mrs Merrills Dooley in 1918 and two brothers survive.

George Birdie Tebbetts, longtime major league catcher, was named manager of the Indianapolis baseball club, top Cleveland affiliate. Tebbetts, a former star with the Detroit Tigers and at one time considered the AL’s premier catcher, has been with the Indiana organization for several years since leaving the Boston Red Sox. Announcement came from Cleveland President Hank Greenberg at the annual conventions in Phoenix.

First Of Eight Fugitives Caught After Western Penitentiary Break
The first of eight prison escapees, Carmac McNelis, was recaptured 24 hours after the Western Penitentiary breakout. McNelis offered little resistance when arrested near McKeesport. Leader Virgil Toney, 42, linked to the T-shirt gang and armed robberies, remained at large with five others. Several escapees fled by rope and via the penitentiary roof, while two on foot were later captured. Police described the group as dangerous.

Tornado Kills 30 In South Africa
A tornado hit a squatters village near Capetown eighteen miles from Johannesburg Sunday night. Thirty people died and about 800 were injured. Emergency services battled fires and searched rubble amid ruined shanties. Local authorities declared a state of emergency and ordered aid to affected families.

Five Injured In One Wreck Over Weekend
Over the weekend five people were injured in a two-car crash on US 52 when a vehicle struck a stick spot and slid into the other. Injured were Mr and Mrs James Newman Lafayette Mr and Mrs Preben Custonier and daughter Helen Castonier treated at Witham Hospital and later moved for further care. Three city crashes Saturday involved parked cars on Road Lakeview and State Road near Northsfield. State Police report Glen Calter of Brewster Road 62 on Lakeview Road collided with Elba Williams of Cincinnati while another crash on Road 320 involved William Kootz of Indianapolis and Harold Shrider of Kokomo ending in a ditch.

Youth Injured in Tractor Accident Near Hazetrigg
Five year old Derian Hicks, son of Mr and Mrs Derris Hicks, was injured Friday when he was struck by a tractor while playing in a field where his father operated the vehicle. He suffered injuries to his right arm and shock, and was treated at Witham Hospital before recuperating at the grandparents’ home near Hazetrigg.

Warehouse Fire Destroys Crawfordsville Storage Warehouse
A fire at Merchants Delivery and Storage Co warehouse in Crawfordsville Indiana caused about 250000 dollars in damage Sunday. Firemen fought the blaze for over three hours and Elmer Dickman a former fire chief was slightly injured by a collapsing wall. A truck furniture and 250 gallons of paint were destroyed.
