About 135 Boone county teachers registered for the sixty fifth annual institute held this week in the high school auditorium. Speeches by Prof L A Pittenger and Dr Harrop emphasized self analysis and analytic power in teaching, urging teachers to cultivate memory, books, and scientific curiosity, while Rev John McD Horne urged unity of religion and business in education. A musical program followed under Miss Mary Stevens.
Monday afternoon Dr Harrop presented a talk on Grant and Lee focusing on their lives from boyhood to old age. He described both as great in manhood and leadership, emphasizing their character rather than victory or defeat. He highlighted the Appomattox scene and the manner of surrender as key episodes.
Rev. O W Wyant, three years pastor of the Lebanon circuit of the Methodist Protestant church, accepts a call to the church at New Haven near Port Wayne. His successor will be Rev George W Grantham, formerly pastor at Salomonia near Marion. The Lebanon circuit includes Milledgeville and Mount Zion churches with services on alternate Sundays.
Bandits stopped a bank messenger on the Clinton to St Bernice road and fled with about 11 000 in payroll cash from the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul railroad. The messenger Floyd Reed and a guard were forced to abandon the auto after an ambush by five assailants. Reed expected to identify the five men who fled toward Danville Illinois. The Mount Tabor Association of Regular Baptists held a three day session at Dulin's Grove north of Whites Town. Eight churches participated led by moderator Ernest Essex and clerk Ralph Stamper. Danville Illinois will host the 1926 meeting as speakers from Virginia and Indiana praised the gathering and a $104.25 offering was shared among visiting ministers.
Carlton Geist general manager of the Atlantic City Gas Company died in a New Jersey hospital after a brief illness from blood poisoning. Mrs Bruce Williams of Frankfort is convalescing from a serious illness. parents L M Ulrey of West Chicago are listed in the report.
A colored man known as Dave Brown denies murder claims in New York while being questioned in a southwest town. He and Andrew Knight claim innocence, with Knight quipping he is chicken-hearted, as authorities match Brown's description to a New York murder suspect and recount a long pursuit across states.
A Bloomington edition note reports ten deaths in twenty four hours across Indiana. Automobile crashes killed several people including children William Bowman eleven and Aloysius Hallemeyer thirty six, plus Lucife Hidden sixteen near Gas City and George Love junior five from an insect bite in South Bend. Other victims include John Anderson sixty one from a lightning strike in a farm field near English and Walter Laglais of Chicago after a Dunes highway crash. A Pennsylvanian train scare in Martinsville cost Albert Kivett twenty, and Frank Schowe twenty two died when a tree fell on him in Columbus. Six more injuries were reported near Anderson on roads and pedestrians injured at Posey county.
Relatives report the death of Mrs Clyde Caldwell in Columbus after several months of cancer. Her funeral arrangements call for services at her home followed by a short service in the city and burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Caldwell was the daughter of Mr and Mrs John Caldwell of Caldwell City. Her marriage occurred recently in Columbus.
The Star Drug Store has a quantity of Rexall national service maps for Lebanon and Boone county motorists. The Indiana map shows road layouts, state parks, reservations, and a list of Rexall stores with locations and populations. Maps are free upon application at the local Rexall store.
Indianapolis August 25. The State Board of Accounts awaits action by the Indiana War Memorial Board on a recommendation to remove the firm Walker and Weeks of Cleveland as architects for the 10 million dollar memorial plaza. Lawrence Orr alleges unethical ties to Rivet Gap Steel Company and says bidding was blocked by this specific steel supply, delaying competitive tendering. The Memorial board will decide at its next meeting, slated for early September.
Dean, 12 years old, was struck by an automobile driven by Ed Kersey late Monday evening about half a mile south of Lebanon. The car halted as the boy crossed the road. his thighs were broken and he was dragged beneath the fender. The incident occurred as residents attended a nearby gathering. the boy was visiting from Jamestown Road.
A late night blaze in Montreal Quebec destroyed an entire city block in the East End. The fire started in a storehouse filled with old furniture and the huge ice house also burned. About 250 people were left homeless and $250000 in property was damaged. The flames rose over a hundred feet, reddening the eastern sky.
L W Ross the Harrison township farmer resigns as head of the Boone County Farm Bureau effective immediately. Roy Rust will serve out the unexpired term. a December 1926 officer election follows. Ross headed county farm bureau work despite ill health and is now under care in Martinsville sanatorium.
Standard Oil of Indiana reduced prices by two cents in eleven midwestern states effective 9 am, prompting similar cuts by independent stations. The move intensifies a regional gasoline war among oil companies, independents, and state-operated stations, with prices as low as 18.8 cents at Wichita.
The 1925 Boone County school plan requires pupils to use listed texts from state and publishers incl The Writing Manual, Arithmetic Book One, Words Book One, and Spelling The Words. The manuals cover reading, arithmetic, spelling, art, music, and practical arts with semester sections and page ranges.
