Newport Rhode Island August 19 Once more death has reached out and penned a tragic chapter in the history of excursion steamer disasters A boiler explosion on the Mackinac near here last night has left death injury and destruction among seven hundred merry makers Thirty are known dead and naval officials say the toll may reach sixty Forty four victims are at Newport and naval hospitals eleven are dangerously injured The Mackinac was homeward bound from an excursion to Newport when the disaster occurred through Coddington Cove About a mile from shore Panic followed as the vessel lifted then sank causing a stampede for lifeboats The ship sent an S O S and struggled toward shore Rescuers including speed boats yachts and naval vessels answered the distress call Senator Jesse Metcalf of Rhode Island owned a yacht that helped tow two men to safety before turning over to authorities
