Washington April 7 a president says the administration seeks an honor system in business and will rely on voluntary observance of laws rather than constant government action. He supports self government in industry, notes tariff protected firms owe customers lower costs, and defends tariff policy without endorsing higher textile duties.
The Wabash College Glee Club performed a mixed program of vocal and instrumental numbers at the Colonial Theatre last night. Soloists J. P. McCormick and Guy M. Neff received praise, with Edgar's Land of Hope and Glory and W. H. Howard's Chanson Melodie highlighted by the audience.
In observance of Passion Week a service at the Presbyterian church conducted by Rev. Hardy Lamb addressed Central school children and teachers this morning. The program was repeated this evening for Stokes school and will be offered Friday at 8 30 for Harney school. Lamb presented the Matthew narrative and described Christ’s last week, last supper, crucifixion and resurrection, then illuminated the choir loft window showing women at the empty tomb.
A fire caused by a defective flue totally destroyed the Woody farm house of Rev. Guer ney Woody near Darlington, with Ralph Booker and family occupying it. Furniture on the first floor was saved. The incident occurred Sunday morning, two and one half miles southeast of Darlington.
Prosecutor Lambert filed robbery affidavits in Boone circuit court charging Roy Roegge Elzin McConnell and Wayne Thompson with three holdups and three burglaries in Lebanon. Roegge faces three robbery counts total bond 15000. McConnell and Thompson one each at 5000. Thompson 18 admitted involvement and claimed he was drunk and masked. McConnell confessed similarly. Ruegge denies participation. defense hired Ira Sharp. Trial likely in April term.
Funeral services for William Thomas Miller age 74 will be held Wednesday at 2pm from the First Christian Church with Rev A W Cash officiating. Interment will be in Bethel cemetery. He died after a three week illness of arteriosclerosis at his home on North West street. Born April 29 1850 in Boone county he married Martha Emily Lister in 1871 in this county. His widow died October 28 1923. Survived by five children Ed Miller Seattle Aaron Miller Shelbyville Ella Carpenter Lafayette Asa and Clarence Miller Lebanon and one sister Mrs Kate Black Lafayette. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in this city.
A convocation is planned at the high school Wednesday at 11:15 AM featuring an Easter service in keeping with Passion Week. Rev H P Ivey will deliver the Passion Week talk, Rev Arthur E Cowley will lead prayer, Rev Hardy Lamb will read scripture, and Assell Kauffman will sing.
Hansel Proctor, 17, son of Mr and Mrs Ed Proctor from near Lebanon, won first in the Hendricks County oratorical contest on the Constitution as Carlton High School’s representative. He advances to the district contest at Greencastle this week, earning a $50 prize and a Swiss gold watch from Supt C A McGonagle of Indiana Boys’ state program.
The Charlton High School student, editor of The Herald Indiana Boys' School newspaper and head of Company One in the military training corps, has built a strong record at Plainfield and will return to complete high school work. He represented Charlton in the Hendricks county contest, surpassing peers from Clayton Danville Amo New Winchester Pittsboro Brownsburg Plainfield Stilesville Avon and Litton high schools, delivering an original performance to an appreciative audience.
Indianapolis April 7 Examinations of blood tests for Miss Madge Oberholtzer, assault victim, were conducted by pathologists as her condition remains critical. D C Stephenson, former Klan leader, seeks to bar indictments with a plea in abatement, while Earl Klenck and Earl Gentry face arraignment on conspiracy charges. Bonds set at $5000 each. prosecutors plan demurrer to the plea.
The Central Christian church will hold the first pre Easter Passion Week service Wednesday night with Women's Missionary Society presiding. Additional meetings are scheduled for Thursday and Friday evenings. The Wednesday program includes a devotional on Jesus in the Garden with readings by Robert Nelson and Dr. H. N. Coons, special music by the Young Ladies' Quartette, and a season of prayer by the congregation.
The Brown's Wonder church organizes a pre Easter meeting led by men featuring a cantata on the crucifixion and a Sunday evening service by the ladies depicting the women at the tomb and the resurrection.
The Easter edition of Adler's Store News is issued today with The Reporter and mailed to 7 500 homes in Boone and five adjoining counties. The issue highlights Easter merchandise and announces winners of the March cross word contest. Winners names appear on the front page of The Store News, a special section of The Reporter.
The April meeting of the Central School Parent-Teacher Association will be held on Thursday April 9 instead of Friday. The program begins at 3 o clock and includes a talk on the Passion Play by Mrs Cora Morgan Williams.

Chicago April 7 State's Attorney Robert F E Crowe's staff argued today that William D Shepherd obtained the typhoid bacilli used against his foster son Billy McClintock. They seek to prove Dr Charles Fatman supplied the germs from the health department and show Fatman’s aide Hoerger linked to him. Coroner tests continue on Emma Nelson McClintock and Billy's body to measure mercury traces. Shepherd's bond appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court is heard today as arraignment nears Thursday before Chief Justice Jacob Hopkins, with trial likely set then.

A blazing fragment from a bonfire in the alley west of Cedar Hill cemetery on North Park street ignited dry grass and spread across about half the cemetery before the fire department contained it. Many stone markers were scorched but not seriously damaged.
Boone county rural and town schools will close Friday April 24 except Lebanon and Thorntown which close in late May. Thortown high school holds commencement May 28, Lebanon following night. Townships plan separate eighth grade commencements. some may join in early June while others skip eighth grade events. Speakers are being secured for county commencements with dates set in several townships.
Fred Siess, a Boone county carrier of Ford cars and tractors, was urged by Democrats and Republicans to run for city council in the first ward. He agreed and filed as a Democrat, facing a Republican contest from William Cosler and Charles Fa in a lively primary.
