A North Side home at 332 N Lafayette avenue was entered in daylight and $40 stolen. Neighbors spotted a tall dark man in a black shirt and cap leaving the scene around 7:30 pm. The house was ransacked, but Thompson’s home next door remained untouched. Bouser, who works at a cream separator plant, suspects no carnival link.
A first ever night shift is instituted at Indiana State Prison due to high demand for twine. Warden Fogarty orders the nocturnal operation starting Tuesday, with strong rivalry noted between night and day crews. Amos Pinchot, member of the State Progressive Executive committee, releases a 4000 word letter urging Geo W Perkins, chair of the National Committee, to resign for the good of the party. He accuses Perkins of blocking labor unions from organizing and bargaining with capital and says he has repeatedly stated this stance. The letter was sent May 23 to Colonel Roosevelt and Perkins, with no reply.
The Lebanon Daily Herald announces a full page offer to finance a new playground for the city. The publisher says the plan is separate from a recently rejected city park proposal and invites citizens to back the movement without personal cost.
The will of Oliver P. Mahan is probated with Frances I. Mahan named executrix. It leaves Mary M. Mahan household furniture or cash, places a $1800 bequest, and directs $200 for a family monument. One third of the remainder goes to Elizabeth Bradshaw, one third to Hoover G. Mahan, with trusts if needed. Mining stock in California is bequeathed to executrix to sell. Real estate goes to executrix to carry out provisions. she may sell debts and assets as needed without bond. The estate also notes ownership of mining stock as heir of Harvey F. Mahan. Fire swept through a crowded East Side tenement today leaving five dead and a dozen seriously injured. Two women, two men and four children were hospitalized, with one woman and her children found scorched to death in a window.
