Sheep Grazing on Chelan Forest Reserve Boosts Leavenworth Economy
The Chelan Wenatchee forest reserves in Chelan county host open range grazing now a major local industry. About a quarter million sheep fatten annually from June to September, paying five to six and a half cents per head for the season. Revenue to the U S exceeds $6,000 yearly with 35 percent returned to county schools and roads. Leavenworth merchants benefit as guards and packers buy supplies in the city, and the meat trade grows with last year shipping over 200 carloads. A few cattle graze the Chelan reserve, but sheep dominate. owners work through assigned sections to prevent overgrazing and enhance range quality.
