Call Halt on Demands Made by Indigent Poor
Chelan county officials launched a campaign to cut expenditures after an audit found indigent aid costs far higher than before. A county city committee will review each case to determine real needs, and past weekly orders were pared down before approval. The move targets welfare lists including food, fuel, and basic supplies.

State levies trimmed as equalization panel closed to three funds
Olympia reports that the state levy for general, school and military funds may be substantially reduced next year. The equalization committee can adjust only these three funds while fixed levies for 11 others remain by law. Finance officials note the treasury is healthier, with improved revenues and reduced overdraft, supporting anticipation of a sizable general fund cut. Governor Hart foresees broad savings and cautions against excess appropriations.
