NEW ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES FOR GREAT NORTHERN TRAIN
Four electric locomotives ordered by the Great Northern will replace steam in its Cascades tunnel system. The 113 ton units use four 400 hp induction motors, controlled by Sprague-General Electric Multiple Unit apparatus, with regenerative braking and water rheostats for energy dissipation. Power comes from a We Natechee River station via 30 000 volt lines, stepping to 6600 volts at tunnel mouth, feeding an overhead modified catenary.
