A. H. Devers of Crosset & Devers warns that a virtual coffee crop failure this year in Brazil and Central America, plus higher delivery and production costs, will push retail coffee from 45–50 cents to about 60 cents per pound. He notes last year’s crop was 20 percent short and this year may be 50 percent below normal. Labor costs and postwar demand further support higher prices. Devers has 36 years in the industry and has visited Brazil and Central American plantations to study conditions.
