Enormous Value of Coal Land in Western Reserves
United States Geological Survey reports vast western coal lands totaling over 70 million acres owned by the government with beds up to 80 feet thick. Under a new sale method based on coal tonnage the government expects higher revenues, with recent sales reaching $400 to $600 per acre, and a projected net gain of about $420 million compared to the old valuation. Proceeds go to the irrigation reclamation fund.

Railroads Prepare Readjustments After Rate Ruling
Western railroads face readjustments due to the interstate commerce commission rate decision. Howard Elliott, president of the Northern Pacific, notes flat expenses but a sharp drop in operating revenues. Officials say rate limits require curtailed expenditures, even as Elliott remains in place amid Missouri Pacific presidency talks.
