Unclaimed World War Veteran Bonuses Return to State
The state auditor received forty warrants for World War I veterans who applied for state bonus allowances but postal authorities cannot locate the claimants. About 3,000 veterans remain unanswered after inquiries. A Supreme Court ruling denying regular the right to a bonus left 58 warrants totaling 16,065 held pending legislative action. An open question concerns whether the permanent school fund may receive escheated bonus money. Terence McKay died at Arrowhead Springs California without heirs after his $260 bonus warrant was issued, possibly escheating to the fund. Treasurer C. J. Babcock will seek a ruling.
