The G N Lumber Co yard buzzes with activity as box and saw mills approach full operation. Electric lights are being wired for both mills and donkey engines now in service. Logs arrive in doubling quantities. multiple log trains run daily, with plans to operate night and day if workers are found. Apple picking season could strain labor, though women plan to assist in orchards.
Mrs John Bruce Dodd of Spokane Washington urges a nationwide Fathers Day observance this year on June 17 with the slogan Do a good deed on Fathers Day. She recommends a deed the individual believes would meet a father’s approval, and praises Red Cross work as a fitting act in wartime.
About one hundred autos left Leavenworth bound for Wenatchee to attend Flag Day events. The program included athletic sports footraces and drilling contests. A parade from noon to twelve was the day’s feature. Returning tourists reported a pleasant time.
Road Supervisor Parish says a new 24 mile river road from Plain Wenatchee Park to Chiwaukum is opened along the west bank with county Forestry support. Seaman and Quigg crews work on Chelan county section. travel possible by August 1st.
O H Carver of an aviation company announces the start of construction of ten standard Curtiss J N tractor airplanes for the United States government at Yardley near Spokane Washington. He says three brick buildings five acres and 1600 acres will be used for a flying field and production aims for July 15 with a capacity of 30 machines per year. The planes, to be built to War Department specifications, cost about 15000 dollars fully equipped and must pass government tests. The company moves from Wallace Idaho to Spokane for facilities and proximity to Fort George Wright and Spokane valley flying potential.

Mr. Leftwich owner of the Chikamin Hotel and a dairy ranch operator was killed near his home when his car plunged down a forty foot embankment after leaving the grade. Passenger Henry Peppmuller was injured. The accident occurred on a narrow hillside road recently repaired with loose earth. Leftwich, known as a fast driver, died instantly from a fractured skull and neck. The body lies at Leavenworth Undertaking parlors. embalming and shipment to Georgia arranged for his brother.
About 100 Russians traveled on Great Northern No 1 Monday to Seattle for a ship to Vladivostok to join the fight for Russia against Germany. Men spoke of spreading democracy and urging Russians to resist peace with Germany to avoid restoring the emperor.
Two automobilists in Wenatchee met on a street corner and tried to pass each other. One was on the wrong side, the other followed, both reversed repeatedly, and they ended up colliding in a foolish bumper exchange.
Ira Baird in charge of the shoe department cites a quarter page Echo ad as boosting shoe sales. Echo urges weekly ad changes and special deals to encourage local buying. It promotes the trade at home policy to support community growth, property values, and local merchants. Next week the Echo promises another reason to trade locally.
Washington dispatch of June 11 reports orders for the arrest of every man aged 21 to 30 who cannot show a certificate of registration for war service after 9 o clock tonight. The government will spend millions to enforce the law and may prosecute any eligible individual at any time.
Van Epps reports heavy snow blocks access to his Icicle Creek head properties but eyes a future railroad from Leavenworth. He plans eastern visitors this summer and cites flattering mining reports. Over two miles of tunnel expose a rich ore vein, turning the Vance claims from prospect to potential producer pending transportation.
Attorney General Tanner outlines that filing a sufficient petition suspends the bone dry law for 60 days after the election. He notes sufficiency is a fact to be proven by actual count and that the secretary of state's filing prima facie confirms sufficiency while awaiting the count.
Under Port land forest service supervision a crew of road engineers prepares estimates for Blewett Pass work this season. The project includes continuing the county grade on this side of the pass and extending last year's government grade on the Chelan divide. Ranger Kirs tetter reports the Blewett route is in first class condition and traffic runs about 10 to 12 cars daily, rising gradually.
Mr. Sylvester of the forestry office states a telephone line is being extended from the forks of the road toward Wenatchee Lake in Beaver Creek basin, fourteen miles up the Chewawa river valley.

George Asher aged 81 father of Mrs. J. B. Schons died at Wenatchee Hospital last Monday morning. The body was taken to Buffalo Wisconsin for burial.
A bridge crew of eight traveling from the Chumstick bridge to the roundhouse was injured when a gasoline work car left its track after an open main line switch. Ottin Hostbjer sustained a severe facial cut and body bruises, with no broken bones, and was taken to Leavenworth Hospital for treatment. He will be laid up for several weeks.
Last Tuesday city council met with full attendance and approved several bills. The water commissioner's salary was raised from 85 to 100 dollars monthly. Resignation of Councilman W. T. Van Brocklin was accepted. Applications for police chief were filed by J. F. Pratt and Jack Love. The case of ex Mayor Day against Mayor Hale was noted with a potential attorney fee up to 100 dollars.
Home Guards are organized and drill sessions are set for Wednesday and Friday evenings on school grounds. Harry Krollpfeiffer was chosen as commanding officer after a meeting last Friday. About twenty members joined and aim to double numbers soon. Members are urged to bring a gun for tonight's practice and to attend with friends.
Ted Cole and William Douchene faced charges after allegedly taking an automobile from Patons garage in Cashmere without owner consent. They were arrested in the city Monday night by Marshall Teshera after wrecking the car. Cole paid a $100 fine and escaped judgment.
One Okanogan man stands as the sole Washington registrant seeking compensation for wartime service. Lieutenant Governor Hart, overseeing state registration, asked Okanogan officials to name the man who prevented a clean record on federal expense.
