League is Big Fake Says Senator Reed
In Washington on June 12 Senator Reed of Missouri excoriated the proposed league of nations as a fake in a lively debate with Senator Hitchcock of Nebraska. Reed argued the covenant would give power to backward states and that the executive council would be dominated by five nations, making it a quintuple alliance rather than a true league. Senator Hitchcock and Senator Knox pushed back noting possible paths to justice through both council and assembly.
