In Olympia, the legislature endures long adjournments with 71 1 2 hours. Debate centers on a 40 day limit, state health officer, and a $200 000 home for aged blind and disabled amid lobbying by racing interests and calls for economy.
The summer of 1909 will bring five brick business blocks to Leavenworth. Plans are drawn or in progress for new structures on Front street and at key corners including Mike Fitz on an 80 by 30 foot lot, Leavenworth Mercantile addition 30 by 100, E A King corner brick 30 by 100, J W Elliott two story brick between the opera house and City Drug, and Debord McCoy brick on Front street 60 by 100. Further expansions may occur if Mill company or others proceed, but these five are most certain.
Leavenworth council met in regular session with one absence. The Street and Alley Committee warned of dangerous streets after Tumwater Light and Water Co dug up pipes. A bridge inquiry report criticized signers, funds, and plans while time was granted for final findings. A bond for the utility to cover damages was required and permission given to open streets for thawing and repairs.
