Parcel Post Lessons and Rate Maps Explain New System
New parcel post law from New Year allows sending goods up to eleven pounds with length and girth limits. Post offices use zone maps and scale indicators to determine postage for eight zones from local to far destinations. Rates start at five cents per pound in the local zone, with one cent per extra pound, plus a separate four ounce or less rate. Insurance up to fifty dollars is available.

The First Meerschaum Pipe Unveiled in Pesth History
Karol Kowates, a Pesth shoemaker, invented the meerschaum pipe and died in 1764. A large meerschaum piece reached Pesth via Count Andrassy in 1723, from Turkey. Kavol Konates carved two pipes inspired by the white clay, one for himself and one for Andrassy, leading to global meerschaum mining and pipe making.
