A Monitor writer reports dire smallpox conditions in Wenatchee and warns Leavenworth residents of rising risk. He faults the health board for inaction and urges immediate precautions to protect schools and children from a potential outbreak.

The state Grange executive committee asks members to back only candidates for the state constitutional convention who support direct legislation via initiative and referendum. Variations exist by state with Michigan Maine Washington Oregon in favor, New York opposed, debated at the national Grange meeting in Denver and likely to recur in Hartford.
The citizens of Republic, Washington send President Theodore Roosevelt a carved fir club as thanks for his leadership. The gift, made from a knot in a fir limb and finished by Elmer E. Clark of the Oversight mine, accompanied a letter signed by Republic's leading citizens.
