Sweet Lips changes hands in historic gun transfer
The gun Sweet Lips once credited with tipping the American revolution has passed to Mr. Ware, pensions commissioner. It belonged to Darling Jones, who fought in Shelby’s and Sevier’s regiments as a 16 year old. Jones bore the weapon at Kings Mountain in 1780, allegedly firing the shot that killed Ferguson. Jonesboro resident Jones died in 1848 and left the gun through family transfers to Frank Montcastle before reaching Montcastle’s kin. The item’s age and lore contrast with its long, clumsy flintlock form as it marks a pivotal Revolutionary War moment.
