An early morning fire at D M Thomas General Merchandise on east Commercial street caused an estimated loss over $3000. Newell Thomas woke his brother Burt in time to escape. volunteers battled the blaze for about 90 minutes, with repairs and settlement efforts underway as insurers adjust claims.

Large 1800 class engine drowns into turntable pit
One of the Great Northern 1800 class engines rolling free from a roundhouse toppled into a turntable pit last Sunday with no crew aboard. Fifteen men spent 24 hours to lift it back onto the track while officials blamed unrepaired condition and scarce engines for delaying repairs.

Francis Marion Ewell born February 10 1854 near Manassas Junction Virginia died December 6 1907 at River Glen Ranch near Peshastin Washington He lived in eastern Washington since 1881 mostly on a Davenport area farm Later moved to Wenatchee Valley buying a fruit farm near Peshastin He was a man of strong individuality and integrity and faced illness with belief his days were numbered His last words to loved ones were I cannot keep you with me He was a devoted husband and indulgent father, a nobleman in nature, leaving a sorrowing family
