Wages Higher as Rail Jobs Spur Northwest Labor Boom
The Northwest sees wage increases for railroad camps as contractors bid up pay to attract workers. Seattle common labor earns about 3 a day with steady prospects, while ax men reach 3.50. Many workers abandon camps for homesteads, timber claims, or Alaska mines for higher pay, despite contractors promising the best meals.

signaling apparatus trial by Jefcoate at Wirral tests
English letter describes H. J. Jefcoate of Crewe testing a new railway signaling device on the Wirral line. An engine at 60 mph with a tarpaulin cab halted at the distant signal until the arm dropped, then advanced. In-cab indicators and bells relayed semaphore status as two bars and plungers activated bells in the cab. The test impressed witnesses with its simplicity and practicality.
