War with Mexico Opens After U S Troop Landing
The war began Tuesday at 8 a m as American admiral and troops landed on Mexican soil. Two days of fighting left about twelve Americans dead and fifty wounded with Mexican casualties estimated at 150 to 200 killed. Vera Cruz serves as Mexico’s chief seaport and entrance to the capital. The cargo of arms from Germany prompted hostilities. U S diplomat O Shaughnessy departed Mexico City after receiving his passport. Carranza resents US troop landings and calls for withdrawal, risking a longer conflict if the United States must face both sides. Tampico, a gulf port and Tehuantepec railroad terminal, is likely to be occupied next.
