President nominates Foster of Indiana to fill Blaine’s seat. name sent to Senate and confirmed at once amid broad approval. Other news from all quarters reports varied developments and regional updates.
The President sent John W. Foster of Indiana to the Senate for Secretary of State. The Senate confirmed in executive session and the President signed the commission immediately. The appointment met with general favor and was approved without reference to the Foreign Affairs Committee, an unusual compliment. Foster was offered the post days earlier and hesitated due to financial sacrifice.
Guadalajara and surrounding regions endure terror from powerful tremors the strongest ever felt. An eighteen second first quake shattered glass and cracked plaster, forcing hundreds into the streets. Funds are needed to back eighty five Parliament seats and cover legal expenses of 150000 dollars, with two weeks left to raise the money.
Edwin J. Ryan, who fled Washington with $80,000 of United States Express Company money, has been arrested in Denver Colorado. The stolen funds were recovered in the course of the arrest.
Pittsburg special reports a wage deadlock at Carnegie's Homestead plant with workers vowing not to accept any cut. The firm plans to operate a non-union mill after July 1, prompting fears of trouble. North China Daily News notes riots, blaming women missionaries for provocation by dressing in native costume. Missionaries refused escorted escape. At Raub Malays kill three Chinese including an opium farmer. Dr Williams and Sikh escort attacked, two Sikhs killed. several Sikh murders by Malays reported.
A Kingfisher Oklahoma special reports James Holland of Holland & Jones, two black real estate agents, nearly lynched by a mob after advertising to distribute negro land claims for $10. He was taken from his office and saved by police as crowds swarmed the jail, with strong black community anger and vows of vengeance.
Mrs. Alice L. Taylor of Mt. Pleasant Iowa wife of surgeon John 8 Taylor drew and diverted her husband’s pension of 72 dollars per month since July 1874 totaling 16 564 dollars without benefit to him. She paid 8 100 dollars to compromise with the government and is noted as a temperance writer in Iowa.
A sleeper car on the westbound A. and W. passenger train derailed four miles east of Vicksburg Mississippi and tumbled twenty feet into a pond eight to sixteen feet deep. The train was traveling forty mph when it fell. Car partially submerged but no serious injuries among passengers. many were bruised and half drowned.

Anna Flynn, a domestic in Cedar Rapida, set fire to her clothing and leaped from a second story window after apparent despondency from ill health. A prior overdose attempt with tandanum and opium was thwarted by medical intervention. She survived the first act, then burned remaining clothing and died in the fall, described as the city's most desperate self destruction.

The Tax Central Society of Carroll Boone Story Guthrie and Greene counties met in Jefferson for its tenth annual gathering. Papers on medical topics were read including a Boone physician Dr Ensign on secret nostrums for inobriety.
