The House debated the Funding bill on Saturday January 16 with amendments and substitutes rejected. Proposals to replace bank notes with legal tender failed, while a Sherman plan for bonds and certificates was disliked. The bill as amended approved bonds of 400 million and 6 to 10 year certificates, each 8 percent, plus 50 million in coin for redeeming bonds. The Yorktown Centennial Commission bill passed the Senate. other measures funded Freedmen's Bank building purchase and Navy retirements.

The Close Brothers of Lemare Iowa purchase 19000 acres near Larchwood Lyon County from Bloomington speculators at about five dollars an acre. They plan to colonize the tract in spring with English immigrants. The land was originally bought in 1868 for 150 dollars an acre.
