City Election Is Held Here Tomorrow Yell Picked Corn Crop For Neighbors

Neighbors, friends and relatives gathered Wednesday at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Les lie Sheehan to harvest over 180 acres of corn. The event featured assistance from many Loutsch and Groepper families and local residents across Union, Stanton and Maring townships. A noon dinner was served by more than a dozen ladies, and several children appeared in the group photo with Earl Loutsch and Mike Bortscheller helping unload the bumper crop.

Polls Open Early In Le Mars Election

The first real contested election in Le Mars will be held Tuesday November 3 with no party tickets. Mayor candidates are R J M Long Eugene Bud Scholer and E W Rogers. Council at large nominees are Rudy D Adler Ward Batman Gregg Featherston and Albert J Pete Stoos. Ward candidates include Enoch Swanson Francis J Nemmers R L Budde Dr W E Rozeboom Al Engbers. Miss Beverly Morgan Named Director of Campus Activities

Miss Beverly Morgan a 1959 Westmar graduate returns as Director of Campus Activities supervising Weidler Hall events and aiding a study of Westman campus recreational life She earned a teaching certificate from Omaha University taught rural Nebraska schools and led Redbird Mission Kentucky dormitory programs before joining Westmar in 1958 and graduating last spring.

Hartter Handicraft Shop Opens at Home

Mrs Les Hartter will open the Hartter Handicraft shop at her home on 243rd Ave NW this Wednesday. She will offer instruction in mosaic weaving aluminum etching and copper tooling along with other courses. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and evenings beginning this week. Hartter, a longtime adult education teacher and former girl scout leader, notes customers may use the home's front or back door until a new entrance is built.

Sacred Heart Hospital Auxiliary Bazaar Annual Sale

The Sacred Heart Hospital Auxiliary hosts an annual bazaar on Thursday Friday and Saturday November 19 20 at the hospital. A large variety of articles will be on sale including many suitable for Christmas giving. A bake sale will offer fruit cakes pies rolls buns coffee cakes cookies and candy. Lunch will be served all day during the three days. Luncheon chairmen are Mrs A J Orbin Mrs George Foxen and Miss Margaret McDonald.

Perry Triumph Over Le Mars In Muddy Conference Tilt

Perry edged Le Mars 21 to 13 in a muddy Friday night game. Hagen broke a 65 yard run for a score and added a 21 yard plunge. Hunter added a 39 yard run to seal Le Mars' tally. Steve Garrett scored both Perry touchdowns on a 60 yard run and a one yard plunge.

Rebels Without a Cause chosen for senior class play

Le Mars Community High School seniors select the Broadway play Rebels Without a Cause adapted from Dr. Robert Lindner's book. The drama examines a young delinquent and the roots of his problems using psychoanalytic ideas. Performance is November 13 or 14 at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium with admission 75 cents for adults and 50 cents for students. Tickets are sold by senior class members.

Engaged notices report Mary Mearl Peckenpaugh of Sioux City to wed Donald E. Kneifl of Newcastle Nebraska. Mary is a Heelan High School graduate and a Northwestern Bell service representative. Donald served in the army and farms near Newcastle. No wedding date set.

Fire destroys small shed near Harold Beck farm

Fire Sunday afternoon destroyed a small shed west of Harold Beck’s farm residence, about two miles east of Te Mars on Highway 3 and 5. Le Mars fire department responded and soaked a nearby building. The shed, once a broader hose, had been used for storage. loss included a front end loader and chicken waterers and feeders, with some insurance.

Police Court Fines in State Cases Include Several Names

In murky state cases from Milton Schneider Akron to Muriel Me Farland Sioux City, fines were issued for infractions such as failure to dim lights and improper passing. A $15 fine appeared for improper pissing and a $9 expired chauffeur's license flagged Elyde Murray. Rock Valley cases noted similar penalties.

Auto collision damages sought in 1959 case

Darwin L. Johnson sues Thomas Bay for 240.11 for damages to a car in a May 1 1959 collision. The overweight cases list pleas of guilty with fines for N. A. Sitter 46 paid, Lyle B. Sheely 36 fined 82, and Delbert Tiffany 34 fined 116.39.

Tragic One Car Crash Kills Le Mars Girl Nancy Frerichs

Nancy Frerichs 7, daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry J Frerichs, died in a one car crash on Highway 75 four miles south of Merrill about 1 45 pm Saturday. Sister Lorna 18, is in Sacred Heart Hospital after surgery for severe cuts and injuries. The 1958 Ford, driven by Lorna, struck a bridge abutment. sheriff and highway patrol investigated. Nancy was born August 20, 1942, lived in Hawarden before moving to Mars in 1957. Survived by parents, sister Jonna, brother Jamie, and fiancé William Reuter.

Gehlen Edges Rock Rapids 8 6 In Muddy Sioux Land Clash

Gehlen of Le Mars defeated Lyon of Rock Rapids 8 to 6 in a muddy Sioux Land Conference game. A 30 yard pass from Kennedy to Puglaz produced Le Mars' touchdown. Don Peterson scored for Rock Rapids with a fourth quarter plunge from the four. A safety gave Le Mars the margin. Rock Rapids threatened at the end as they were on Le Mars' five yard line when time expired.

Police Thank Kids For Halloween In Le Mars

Le Mars police praised local children for Halloween behavior with few incidents. Chief Fay Verpenning said most children were well behaved and engaged in safe Trick or Treat activities. Frank Scholer reported no complaints of Halloween trouble or property damage, and there were no sheriff’s office reports of wiring theft or coin spills.

Man Dies Suddenly at Remsen Farm

Sheriff and coroner responded to a Remsen farm where 56 year old Casper Freking was found dead. Coroner ruled out foul play. Widow Mary Wulduchmacht survives with six children and four brothers and sisters. Funeral planned at St Mary’s Renisen with burial in parish cemetery. Kay Fisch funeral home handling arrangements.

Funeral services set for November 3 in Le Mars church

Funeral services will be held Tuesday November 3 1999 at St Johns American Lutheran Church in Le Mars at 2 p.m. with Dr J L Belk officiating. Burial follows at Le Mars city cemetery under direction of the Mauer Funeral Home. Mrs Willer Leads Plymouth County Cancer Study Group

Mrs Ed Willer reports her group completed its share in the Cancer Study of Family Habits survey in Plymouth County as part of a nationwide Epidemiological Survey.
