The Tax Foundation reports hidden taxes raise Plymouth County families’ tax load beyond the visible 20 percent. With average gross income about 45,954,000 and total consumer taxes around 4.9 million, families effectively lose about a third of income to taxes, more than the public realizes.
Roy Kolker on the east saw smoke from the Les Oetken home at 301 Central Ave NW in Le Mars after a lightning bolt struck nearby at 8 pm Thursday. Mrs Oetken reported a loud thunder crack, attic wiring burned, phone lines knocked out, and smoke damage throughout the house. firefighters extinguished the blaze. She had insurance.
Promoted to guided missileman second class USN is Larry K. Farmer son of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Farmer of 460 Lombardi Ave Le Mars Iowa. The ceremony occurred June 16 at Miramar Naval Air Station California. Mrs Eva Curry was honored at a Leon school retirement open house after 30 years teaching. Ralph Fulton of Hepburn lost the ends of a thumb and two fingers cleaning a power mower.
A Dorothy Larsen Memorial Bookshelf was announced by Miss Esther Merkle at Westmar College Library. Memorials may be placed via the Dorothy Larsen Memorial Committee and each book will carry a memorial bookplate. The effort honors Dorothy Larsen for her work organizing the library after its move.
Traffic Condition Red activates in Iowa and four neighboring central states to curb holiday deaths. Iowa motorists face stern enforcement and warnings from Safety Education Director Frank Ulish who urges obeying speed limits and taking rest breaks. The plan coincides with new daytime speed limits effective July 4 and targets dangerous driving patterns this weekend. Separately, Iowa State Conservation Commission announces four new park personnel and two transfers, including Craig Kaiser to Pommel State Park, replacing Harry Hunter.
Miss Margaret Carolyn Brownmiller and Richard R Scott wed at Grace Methodist Church on June 14 1959 in a 3 pm double ring ceremony. The bride wore an empire waist silk taffeta gown with Alencon lace and a fingertip illusion veil. orchid majesty daisies and white roses adorned the train. Attendants wore orchid gowns. Linda Stowatter served as maid of honor and bridesmaids included Gail Graver Lynn Gaye Gorans Carolyn Leesley and Judy Scott. A reception followed in the church parlor with a four tier cake and orchid decorations. The couple will reside in Cherokee after a Black Hills honeymoon.
A special election is set for Monday June 29 1949 from 12 noon to 7 pm to organize the Akron Community School District. Voters from Akron Independent School District and six surrounding townships will cast ballots at designated precinct locations including Akron High School Auditorium Johnson No 3 Liberty Portland Preston and Westfield School Districts. A majority overall and in five of six districts is required for the proposal to carry with ballots mailed to precinct chairmen.
Pony Elmer and Hinry Schuster of Osceola own a 38 year old Sheiland pony. Bonnie has spent nearly the winter outdoors with livestock. Joe Manternach of Cascade displayed a six legged pig born as a three legged babe. Harley Moreland near Tipton reported a hairless Hereford calf. Mr and Mrs D W Conrad of London celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. he is Lowden’s oldest resident and she is 85.
A C Reuters celebrate 50 years of marriage with a mass of Thanksgiving and open house. They were wed June 9 1909 in Le Mars and lived in Dubuque before returning to farm south of town then moving to Le Mars 17 years ago. The celebration drew many relatives including 46 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
The June 26 1959 ceremony at Korbella Bedell St Thomas Episcopal Church Sioux City united Missy Gisele Ingborg Korbella and Edger John Bedell in a double ring service conducted by Father Paul Davis assisted by Rev Matlin Whitmer The bride wore an embroidered organza gown with fingertip veil and a crown, carried white rose buds and greenery The matron of honor wore pink and the bridesmaids pale green with matching hats Best man was Glen Houpt and ushers included E J Eaton and Gary Faston A reception followed in church parlors with a four tier pink and green cake The couple’s families reside overseas and could not attend The bride attended Photographie Schule Heidelberg Germany and works as a surgery technician at St Vincent’s Hospital Sioux City
A 7 pound 13 ounce boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Schmidt of Le Mars on June 20 at Akron hospital. The newborn is in good condition and expected to return home soon. Larsen, longtime employee at De Mars hospital, underwent lung surgery in Rochester, Minnesota recently but is improving.
Bohlke wins a 1959 Pontian Catalina car at Alten during a grand prize drawing. Unable to attend, he held the winning number and may claim the prize Friday morning. The winner, Ray Bohllke or Bohle, resides at home in LeMarney area.
The groom, a Le Mars Central graduate and RCA decree recipient from Mownineside College, studies at flaw school Iowa University and belongs to Phi Mu Alpha and Sinfonia. The couple will reside at 3202 Indiana Avenue, Sioux City, and left for a western wedding trip. The bride wore a blue flowered sheath with matching coat and light blue hat.

At Shelton Country Club on June 25 the Invitational Ladies Golf Tournament crowned champions in two flights. In the championship flight M Green finished 2nd and E Null 6th with J Wright 2nd and W Green 5th. In the second flight J Taylor won with H Fisch second. Joellen Tavior shot closest to the pin on the number 3 and Esther Null won the door prize. Linda Killeas won the door prize and Grace Killeas won the blind Bogey while Low putt was Schultz.
Contributions have been made to the American Cancer Society Iowa Division by Plymouth county families in memory of loved ones who died of cancer. Names inscribed in the Living Memorials book include Lena Kallsen Blanche Koch Glenn Stinton and others. R G Fleming found a giant mushroom on his Montezuma area farm measuring 13 and a half inches long.
