Minneapolis and St Paul announce a fixed route Highway Post Office service starting February 2. Buses run from Twin Cities to Sioux City via Shakopee Le Sueur St. Peters Mankato St. James Worthington Sibley Ashton Sheldon Hesper Afton Le Mars to Sioux City, replacing railway mail cars on Chicago St. Paul Minneapolis and Omaha trains. Trains 201 202 will be discontinued. Northbound departures at 3 42 AM and 12 13 AM southbound. Buses resemble ordinary transit but carry pigeon holes mail racks and work space for clerks to sort mail en route. Buses depart Minneapolis at 10 LY and arrive 6 30 AM at Minneapolis St Paul offices.

Labben Dies After Heart Attack At Le Mars Church Service
Gerhard Labben, known as William Labben, died after a heart attack. He and his wife Christina moved to town earlier this month from a funnigar residence. Services are Monday at Christ Lutheran church in Grant township with Rev. Donal Schmidt of Craig, Iowa officiating. Burial in church cemetery under Mauer funeral home of Le Mars. He was born December 2 in Plymouth county and married Christina M. Hance on July 15, 1928. Survivors include his widow, two sons Raymond and Bark of Le Mars, a daughter Lorraine Tubben of Le Mars, one grandchild, four brothers Henry John Phillip Albert all of Le Mars, and five sisters Herman Branken John Octken Harry Westhoff Arnold Westholt of Le Mars and Bruno Brunken of Struble.

Soil And Water Conservation Meeting Held In Floyd Valley
Representatives from the County Agricultural Extension Councils and Floyd Valley Watershed Association met in Orange City on January 17 at the Extension office to review soil and water conservation education in the Floyd River Valley. The group unanimously approved continuing the Extension Soil Conservationist’s education program for the valley. Maurice Eldridge presided, Arlie Pierson presented a pictorial view of the watershed’s development, and John Longstreet discussed the memorandum of understanding among O'Brien Sioux and Plymouth counties and Iowa State College. Joe Clarey and Elmer J. Lund reported on conservation education efforts and the need to extend adoption of practices farmwide. Mayor George Young of Sioux City praised soil conservation work for flood prevention. Extension Director WoML Anderson of Ames said the college would continue the memorandum on the same basis for the past two years, noting Extension’s role in program expansion through farmer-led neighborhood actions.

Power blackout hits Northwest area for hours
About 200000 NIPCO and Northwest Power Cooperative customers lost electric power for about one and a half hours Saturday after an open circuit breaker at the Fort Randall, South Dakota switchyard. Relays opened the 23000 volt line causing the outage. Affected counties include Sioux, O'Brien, Plymouth, Cherokee, Woodbury, Ida, Monona, Crawford, Harrison, Shelby and Pottawattamie. East River Electric Power Cooperative customers remained on service from a separate Fort Randall 11500 volt line. Within 16 minutes power was restored. Iowa Public Service did not supply extra power.
