Local stores and businesses in Le Mars joined a Chamber of Commerce promotion called Santa Claus with numerous sponsors. Santa will tour streets 10:00 a.m. to noon on December 16, 18, 19, 21, 22, and 23 24, with palace visits 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Call Santa at 1495 for details and reservations.
Auction listings dated Dec 29 and Dec 30 outline farm sales. George Bowers, Emil Jacobsen, and George Borman are auctioned by Richards & Ruden and Moret & Faber or Moret & Ahders, with locations 14 N of Le Mars on highway 75, 2 34ths S of Rock Valley, and 2 W of Rock Rapids respectively.
Deanna Dirks of Akron Iowa a Gustavus Adolphus freshman is among eight Augustana Lutheran youths selected for a Europe tour in summer 1960. The program includes meeting in New York, flying June 13, five teams touring Sweden Finland Denmark Norway Austria France and Switzerland, then a joint Lutheran Youth Conference in Germany before continuing to Switzerland. Dirks has held leadership roles in the Lutheran youth movement and recently served as Youth Director at Bethlehem Church Red Oak Iowa.
The NFO schedules a meeting for Tuesday December 15 at Eagles Hall Le Mars replacing the 16th date. Speaker Rueben Hildebrandt a National Organizer from Missouri. NFC members urge turnout citing farmer hardships and calls for NEC collective bargaining plan and stronger small business support.
Postmaster J. W. Conway announces special Christmas hours for the season. From December 12 to December 23 on weekdays the windows will be open 8 30 a m to 5 30 p m. On Sunday December 13 the windows will be open 2 00 to 4 00 p m.
Funeral services for Benjamin Thomas Clagg a longtime Le Mars businessman were held December 12 1959 at 2 p m at First Baptist Church Le Mars burial followed at the city cemetery under Luken Funeral Home supervision Clagg 79 born January 11 1880 at Fort Dodge came with parents to Le Mars as a childHe operated Candy Box later and worked for Gus Peck foundry and Pecks Electric Co He was married to Effie Jones since 1906 their golden anniversary was 1956 Survivors include wife daughter Evelyn Hoyt and son William plus a Masonic Lodge member and First Baptist Church member
Edward Martin Dilley Sr., 74 of Kingsley, was granted a continuance by Judge R G Rodman due to poor health. Indicted by a grand jury last year on lascivious acts with a Kingsley girl, he had been out on bond and previously sent to Iowa City for psychiatric treatment.
Police Court fined Howard Walther of Van's Motel for failure to stop and Wilbur Neyens for not having his vehicle under control with fines of 9 and 15 dollars respectively. Wilbur Neyens was uninjured when his car careened into a ditch south of Le Mars after a tire blew out. the car was badly damaged.
Ed Doornink 87 longtime Sioux Center resident died Wednesday in a local hospital. Born August 2 1872 in Greenleafton Minnesota he married Nellie Van Berkum March 12 1896. Survivors include four sons Dick E LeMars Joe Merrill Theodore and Andrew Sioux Center. two daughters Mrs John R Van der Berg and Mrs Abe Van Ro kel Sioux Center. Funeral services were 1 pm Saturday Vander Ploeg funeral home and 1:30 pm at First Reformed Church with Rev Harry Brower officiating. burial in Sioux Center Community Cemetery.
Le Mars residents will travel to several states to visit relatives for Christmas. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Bowers depart December 2 for Fort Smith Arkansas to visit their son and daughter-in-law and four grandchildren. Dr. Wendell Downing and wife fly December 23 to Ann Arbor Michigan to see their son-in-law and daughter and family, returning December 27. Mr. and Mrs. George Sturges travel December 21 to Cincinnati Ohio to stay with their son-in-law and daughter and family. Mr. and Mrs. R J M Long leave December 21 for Wilmette Illinois to spend Christmas with their son and daughter-in-law and family, and also visit Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Long and family in Appleton Wisconsin. Mr. and Mrs. William Sturges host as guests Christmas to Mrs. Sturges’ parents Mr. and Mrs. John Moore and her brothers John and Robert, plus LaRue Grosenheider of Le Mars and Sally Brundstedt of Merrill who had been sought since last Wednesday and located in Omaha by police. Sheriff Frank Scholer accompanied the girls’ parents to Omaha. they all return home. The girls attend Le Mars Community High School and left Merrill by bus, traced to Sioux City, then Omaha. Central High kitchen ladies held a Christmas party Friday at the home of Mrs. Charles Voerper. attendees included Mrs. Herman Jeffers, Mrs. Florence Brown, Mrs. Roy Dobert, Mrs. William Hamann, Mrs. Koppert, and Mrs. Evelyn DeLair.
A. G. and Mrs. Vander Meer mark fifty years of marriage at their Le Mars home with a family dinner. The couple, residing at 526 1st St. S. W., have eight grandchildren and run VanderMeer Bakery with their son Peter. They married December 9, 1908 in Lebanon Iowa.
Le Mars defeats Central High Little Maroons 55 to 54 in overtime after a tight back and forth game on Central court. Key players include Kilstrom with 22 points for Le Mars and Renken with 14. Central’s comeback effort fell short as Hun ter hit a late 3 and Vanderloo added a late free throw. Nearby notes report sophs’ loss and local moves including Brokaw joining Good Foods.
A single vehicle accident occurred at 3 am on December 12 at the 4th Street northeast railroad tracks. Driver Gerald Hogan of Kingsley was injured with cuts and taken to Sacred Heart Hospital after his car left the street and slid onto the tracks, frame of the car totally damaged.
Mr and Mrs Carl Ahrendt celebrate twenty fifth wedding anniversary with an open house at Christ Lutheran Church Grant Township on Sunday December 2 from 7 30 to 9 p m.

Union Elementary grades present The Little Blue Angel Christmas operetta Friday December 16 at 7 30 pm. Sixth graders lead with all grade school children in parts. Mrs Larry Keck directs. Friends and relatives invited.
Charles Banta, 19, of Oto Iowa was sentenced to a year in Woodbury county jail for assault with intent to commit manslaughter. He was the driver of the car that left Highway 310 north of Smithland last July 4 killing Miss Mary Ellen McDermott, 19, also of Oto. He will begin serving January 2.
