Helena Montana September 11 A seven year old girl Clara Rehberg died after brutal beatings inflicted by a parent. The child was taken to the hospital where medical aid failed to save her. Her father and step mother were jailed and local citizens show anger awaiting justice.
In Suanon Pa on the Erie and Pitts burgh Road trains 21 and 24 collided one mile south of West Middlesex. Fireman Adam Riser and engineer A O Bates were killed instantly. Boilers exploded, debris flew hundreds of feet. Baggage master Frank Lowash severely injured. Express messengers G D Carge and W H Shaffer burned and cut. Mail agent R H Bair bruised. Southbound excursion train of 200 passengers escaped injury. Blame set on mixed train orders. Loss estimated at 35000 dollars.
Omana Nebraska dispatch notes four additional Chinamen recovered from Rock Springs ruins under military protection. A vigorous search is underway for others. General Manager Callaway regrets attempts to justify the disturbance and rejects claims Gov Warren owes Union Pacific as false.
On August 19 the German government received Spain's protest over Germany's occupation of the Caroline Islands. Bismarck replied on September 4 that German traders lived there long and sought protection, Spain had not objected to a 1875 note, and Germany viewed the islands as ownerless. Germany offered to examine Spain's claims in a friendly spirit.
The Chancellor closed his reply by deeming the matter too trivial to risk spoiling the friendship between Spain and Germany, deciding against escalation to arbitration.
About one hundred fifty miners strike in the upper Rock Island County Illinois as two large mines halt operations over pay. They demand 4 cents per bushel instead of the current price. Cold weather nears and fears grow of a coal famine. Striking groups hold meetings and attempted to seize an operating mine. Serious trouble is feared.
In Urana Ill on September 11 Joseph DL and Mr and Mrs Peabody and Belle Hasty died with poisoning symptoms. Young Silas Peabody recovered. Rat poison was found pinned to Belle Hasty underclothing. Authorities suspect Belle Hasty murdered the elder Peabodys to secure a match with Silas and then killed the rest of the family.
Jamestown Dakota September 11 Fred Bosner a section hand assisting with a hand car fell under the wheels at Windsor and was mangled His left ear was cut off his nose broken in several places and severe facial cuts reported though no internal injuries suspected
A Chicago schooner Advance waterlogged and capsized nine miles south of Sheboygan amid a gale and blinding storm. Captain Haubon and his son perished with the crew as their yaw struck a sandbar in the breakers. only one sailor survived.
Grain prices show Wheat at 79540 and corn at 444c with oats at 2a%e and rye at S60 while barley stands at 68c and timothy at $1.70. Provisions list Mess Pork at 5.80 and lard at 6.224%4 and butter 16 23e with cheese T4 40 and eggs L 14xo. Live Brook steer prices reach 6.15, hogs 4.40, sheep 4.00 and 1.75 respectively.

Tom learns his mother’s past and discovers he is his own uncle as Mr. Carlton confirms kinship. The pair visit Mrs. Davis and plan to live with Uncle Tom in the Western home. Kitty reflects on fate linked to a muff that led to the long awaited reunion.
