News by wire reports a Waterloo Iowa call case costing over 20000 dollars, a Dubuque safe burglary mystery, and a La Crosse Wisconsin homicide involving Patrick Kenai allegedly killed by theBwffies Kelley.
Beadle County Democratic Central Committee and South Dakota Democrats issue a call for a mass convention in Huron on October 21 to act on the Sioux Falls constitution. Territorial Committee to meet in Mitchell October 14 to arrange party actions for the upcoming constitutional election.
In Waterloo Circuit Court, Jones County calf theft malicious prosecution suit concluded. Robert Johnson sued E. V. Miller and six others for 10000, tied to Foreman calves stolen eleven years earlier. Jury awarded 7000 with extensive costs and fees, calves not worth over 50 at the time.
A 62 year old man was slain and his 44 year old killer, a linen peddler with a violent temper, fled toward the bluffs. Large search parties are scouring the area for Kelley, who has local familiarity and could strike concealment. The victim left a wife and no other family.
In St. Vincent Minnesota on October 9 the Kelly murder trial resumed after a near weeklong hold. Assistant U.S. District Attorney Congdon had been instructed by Secretary of State Bayard to hold the prisoner on extradition but did not appear. Witness Manuel Dainard testified with little new added.
Desvern Iowa October 9 reports a bold safe robbery at the Du buque Building and Loan Association. about $2000 in cash stolen. secretary HE 8 Hetherton claims to have locked the safe the night before and cannot explain the break in through the transom. detectives to be sent from Chicago for thorough inquiry.
At Fergus Falls Minn an inquest on the disaster heard EF Jr Reed testify the seventeen car train left Wahpeton at 11 30 on orders matching the engineer s. The train broke in two the rear cars froze the brakes and a brakeman was killed. Jury ruled accidental death by collision. Northern Pacific will bury the dead and reimburse the circus for wrecked cars with about 5000 railroad loss. Bratwearn shows settlement with hospitalised showmen and a possible 5000 damages claim for property.
A man’s body, about five years old, was found this morning in a Hastings slough near the river crossing. He appeared to have fallen from a train or struck the trestle, with a head wound likely from braces. Remains in the care of the Washington County Coroner. no inquest planned. unidentified.
